I am a few days behind our six month update, but wow, has she really been home six months? We just had our last visit with our social worker and will work now on another round of paperwork before the adoption is final. It was amazing talking with our social worker and seeing how much Little Miss has progressed. On our first visit I had to stand and hold Little Miss the majority of the visit. This visit Little Miss was dancing, all smiles, playing with toys and was a social butterfly. It took a few minutes for her to warm up, but it was a great visit. I am thinking we still have another six to twelve months before we can officially become her parents and give her our last name. Believe me, I will let you know when that happens.
I thought I would try something different for this month of updates so let me know what you think.
Attachment
Little Miss continues to attach to us and we continue to play many attachment games and activities. One thing we learned is that we need to continue with attachment. We might think she is 100 percent attached and back off and then find out later that she is still not. She does know we are her mom and dad and are safe. In a crowd she wants to be beside us, but she is opening up to others. It now only takes a couple of minutes of her having a blank face before she shows her personality. She understands a lot, but I don’t think she realizes we are here to stay, and she won’t be passed on to another family. That will come with time, but we are thrilled with the progress we are seeing. It still has only been six months, and she is doing wonderfully.
Food
I am asked her favorite food many times, and while she did enjoy Halloween candy, she can eat a full adult serving of salmon and broccoli. The other day she picked a piece of Halloween Candy for her snack, looked at it, said chocolate, and took a bite of the peanut butter cup. After that one bite, she put it aside, said, “all done”, and asked for mango. She wanted mango over chocolate candy????? I am a little shocked, but we are running with it. Plus, I have learned to try food multiple times in different ways. I have also learned if she helps cook it, she wants to eat it. She was never into pancakes or waffles and then one morning Yankee decided to have her help him with the pancakes. Before we knew it, she was asking for seconds on pancakes.
Language
Over the last two weeks her language has really blossomed, and I think we all have a surprised look when she puts words together. Yesterday I was in the kitchen, and she ran in, took my hand and said,”Mommy come here.” Umm…. Wow! Usually she just said my name, but now she is putting words together. It is fascinating to see this happen in front of our eyes.
Activities
Little Miss has a baby doll that she loves to carry around, and she rocks the baby, feeds the baby etc. I love seeing her play. She also really enjoys the Big Legos and these dress up dolls. We have some great children’s museums and activities in Charlotte, and she enjoys everything from cooking to pretending she is driving a Nascar. If you live in the area and haven’t checked it out, this place is a must for this age. We also both really enjoy having her help us cook in the kitchen. I was out one morning, and I came home to these awesome soft pretzels made by my two loves. The excitement is contagious when she is in the kitchen cooking.
Travel and Holidays
This month we did a road trips to Kentucky to visit my parents and to West Virginia to celebrate my grandmother’s 90th birthday. She is a pretty good traveler. She has her own suitcase and likes to wheel it to the car and then into our destination. She likes to make sure I pack her sound machine. I really do think this has helped because while the bed might be different, her sound machine is the same soothing sound. I hope she will be able to outgrow it before she goes to college or her roommate might not be a fan of the babbling brook! We also got this for our car trips, and she really likes having a table. We can put some things with her to play with during the trip. We also did Halloween where she dressed up as a watermelon. Our neighborhood does a little Halloween parade and after realizing she would get candy, she thought it was fun. At one point she had two pieces of candy in her bag and just starred and smiled. She said, “two candy, ahhhh.” I think we could havestopped right then and there, and she would’ve been thrilled.
Gracie
She is a fan of Gracie, but it has to be on her terms. However, we have learned Gracie is very protective over her. One night when we were visiting my parents, they did bath time and put Little Miss to sleep. Gracie wouldn’t leave her side and went to sleep right beside her. #girlsbestfriend She does loves having Gracie run in her room and act crazy when she has just gotten up from the night and nap time. When Gracie finally sits and calms down, she says “good girl.” She likes to watch Gracie’s hyperactivity from bed and doesn’t like all the kisses that sometimes come with Gracie. At times I’ll see her just walk over to Gracie and give her a hug or stand by her and pat her. Gracie has some outdoor toys that she tries to sneak into the house. Well, let’s just say Little Miss is on top of those toys not being in the house. She goes and grabs them, says, “no, no, no” to the dog, takes them and throws them outside. Gracie also likes to hide a bone around the house, and Little Miss usually finds the bone and gets it and takes it right to Gracie. Poor Gracie….. I don’t think she is going to win in that battle unless she ups her hiding spots.
So, that’s it for this month. We are all so in love with this little girl and can’t believe how lucky we are to have her in our lives.
