S’Mores in a Jar – Revisited

By Janette | Desserts, Food

Hello, everyone.  It felt great taking a long weekend, but it’s always good to get back to the blog and touch base with all of you.  We had a house full of family last week, and it continues.  Little Miss is staying this week along with Baby Girl.  My daughter-in-law Josie has a film project this week in another state, and Baby Girl is staying here.  We are calling it Camp Ya Ya, but Ya Ya will probably need a camp (or at least a massage) when they leave.  I am hoping I can keep up with a four year old and an 18 month old. Yesterday, we took the girls to the Kentucky Castle for brunch, and we will be sharing that with you tomorrow.   There are other plans in the works, but when all else fails, there’s always the park.

As is the custom here on the blog, our first blog post this month will be our most popular post from last July.  The s’mores in a jar wins that title.  If you have not made these dessert treats, now is the time – especially if there is a picnic in your future.  Enjoy this revisit.

S’mores in a Jar is a great show stopping dessert.  Oh my goodness. You all need to make these STAT.  When we go to the annual July 4th concert and carry a cooler that holds our picnic dinner, I like to include a dessert in a jar.  In the past I have made cherry pie in a jar, and strawberry shortcake in a jar.  This year I came up with s’mores in a jar, and they are so very good.  The whole family, (except six month old Baby Girl who didn’t get any) loved them and practically licked their jars clean.  Other than being tasty, these desserts are very easy to make.  You can do an instant pudding version or a cooked from scratch pudding version (link is here), or a from the box cooked pudding.

  • 6 one-half pint mason jars with lids

  4. Put a layer of graham crackers in the bottom of each jar.
  5. Top with a few spoons of chocolate pudding.
  6. Top with 2 spoons of marshmallow creme
  7. Add a few chocolate chips.

Although you can make the instant or box pudding, I highly recommend this chocolate pudding recipe.  It is very chocolatey (is that a word?), and I think the pudding makes this dessert a stand-out.  For several years,  I have been using Pernigotti cocoa powder for several years.  It’s the same kind that the Barefoot Contessa uses.  It’s a little more expensive, but it lasts a long time because it comes in 2.2 pound bags.  I definitely think it’s worth it, and if you love your chocolate than you probably want the quality product.  You can get more info about it here.

These s’mores are a great way to have the flavor of the real McCoy, but you don’t have to build a fire.  Using this recipe is a great way to capture one of summer’s favorite treats in a jar.  They’re perfect for camping trips, cook-outs, picnics, fishing trips, a day in the boat, an afternoon at the pool, or a snack at the park.  Just remember to pack some spoons.  Oh, and the kids can help you make them.  That’s another plus to serving these delicious s’mores in a jar.

Take care.
