As an undergraduate and graduate student, I rode my bicycle across the country three times to help raise money for Habitat for Humanity. Let’s just say I know cycling, and I love it. Since living here in Syracuse, I have been able to once again put my biking skills to work in a new way each summer by teaching autistic children how to ride bicycles. Each volunteer in the week-long program is paired with an autistic child, and the end-of-the-week goal is to have each of the children riding on their own. Through this program I have been able to observe first-hand the challenges, obstacles, and fears both the parents and the children go through.
April is Austim Awareness month, and many people know someone who is affected by the disorder. The other day NPR had a story about autism and said that now one person out of 68 is somewhere on the spectrum. I was shocked with those statistics, so I am thrilled to know Stella & Dot is raising money for the cause. I have been a Stella & Dot representative since last spring, and I wanted to share with you what they are doing to help donate money to the HollyRod Foundation. This month all of the net proceeds made from selling items from the Autism Awareness boutique will benefit the HollyRod Foundation. Last year Stella & Dot donated more than $120,000 and we hope to donate more this year. Below are a variety of items you can purchase and know you are helping an excellent cause. If you don’t personally need anything, you might find a gift for Easter, Mother’s Day, or graduation.

It’s wonderful to see people are more aware of autism and extending their support with awareness program. One of my nephew is autistic and I know how it feels in the family when a child is unable to blend into the society. Thank you for your support!
