High Tea With Mom

By Jordan | Out and About

One of the ways Mom and I love spending time together when we aren’t working on projects is going to afternoon tea.  You can read about our last outing here.  When I visited her this week-end, we once again returned to our favorite tea haunt, The Greentree Tearoom in downtown Lexington’s historic area.

We always make it a point to go to high tea, no matter which country we are traveling in, like this one in Argentina.  And we have decided that the Greentree is as elegant and as delicious as any of them.  We love it so much that we hosted my bridal luncheon there.  Another great thing about this place is that they change their menu monthly and keep it seasonal.

The table was as elegant as ever.

Something else we can always count on is that it will be a high-calorie day.

We started out with a delish roasted red pepper soup – made with cream.

Next came an oatmeal scone with white chocolate chips, orange marmalade, and Fayette cream.

One of the best things about having tea together is that it gives us a chance to really talk without distractions.

Rob, who has worked at the Greentree since it opened 14 years ago, always greets us with hugs and keeps our tea cups full.

Even though we are full by the time we finish the scone, we always continue.  The entree for October was a delicious frittata and side salad.

The main topic of conversation that day was the Thanksgiving meal that I will be serving at my house in Syracuse.  It will be my first.  All of our grandparents, parents, an aunt, uncle, and my brother (see his music blog here) and his girlfriend will be there.  A lot of planning will take place to insure the week-end goes smoothly and that everyone gets plenty to eat.

After the entree, we went to the center table for a buffet of finger sandwiches and desserts.  This is what it looked like before all of the foods were set out.

There’s always such a beautiful selection of savories.

The sweets never disappoint either.

The buffet table is always decked out in its seasonal best.

By the time we started on the buffet selections, we were pretty much stuffed.  Even though the food is always a hit, spending time together trumps it all.  I am so glad we have this tradition to share.

Cheers!

A mother-daughter tea is a lovely thing. It’s a tradition that my mother and I began and which I continue with my married daughter. You’re right – as beautiful as the surroundings and as delicious as the food might be, it’s the time together that makes the afternoon!
