We have been in Laos for ten days now and have had our fair share of rice: jasmine rice, steamed rice, sticky rice, chicken fried rice, pork fried rice, shrimp fried rice, wild boar fried rice, and even rice soup for breakfast. This overdose of rice started a great debate between Jordan and me.
We can pretty much agree on anything, and that has always been the case. But this particular issue is forcing us to agree to disagree. For us, that is major. We just get along, plain and simple. So, what has the potential to pull us apart, you ask? Well, it’s rice. That’s rice, I mean right,. We both love it, but we disagree on how to cook it. I say do it the old-fashioned way with a pan and water on the stove. But Jordan is in favor of modern gadgets and opts for the rice cooker. Here’s her side:
PRO Rice Cooker

One of the greatest things I bought while living in Hawaii was a small rice cooker. For part of a wedding present someone gave us two entire recipe books of just rice. Every recipe I have tried from those books has been really good. I have been using the cooker since 2006 and L.O.V.E. it. Every time I make rice, it comes out perfectly. It is fluffy, cooked just right and doesn’t require me to stand by and keep it from cooking over. Clean-up is easy, and I just store the rice cooker on a shelf when it is not being used

I honestly don’t get it. Maybe this makes me appear to be an old fuddy-duddy, but if you follow the directions on the package of rice, it is good every time. Yes, I do agree that I have to baby-sit it while it is cooking so that it doesn’t boil over, but at least I don’t have another appliance to deal with. For the best bowl of rice, just put the rice in a pan along with a double portion of cold water, add a touch of salt, a pat of butter, put the lid on it and forget it. However, if you happen to forget it before you turn down the heat for the simmer, then you might have a mess on your hands and on your stove. But otherwise, cooking rice in a pot is the way to go.
What do you think? Rice cooker or pan on the stove? Let us know so we can settle our little debate.
