Orange Chocolate Scones

By Janette | Food, Sides and Salads

Editor’s Note – We we’re reminded by an observant reader that two ingredients were omitted from the recipe.  Add 1 teaspoon fresh grated orange rind and 1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips before adding the egg/milk mixture.  I am writing this from a small town in Peru with horrible WiFi.  I could not change the ingredients through our app. Will correct it when we get home next week.  We are doing fine and are sore from lots of manual labor😀.

When I hosted a tea party recently, I knew that scones needed to be on the menu.  After all, it was a high tea served in the afternoon, and if there’s one thing I want at a sit-down tea, it’s a good scone.  I looked through various scone recipes on line and then decided to come up with my own version.  I took this delicious biscuit recipe and turned it into these orange chocolate scones by switching some ingredients and adding some more.  Scones, in my opinion, are just fancy biscuits. And by the way, there are variations on that original biscuit recipe here, here, and here.

Scones can be sweet or savory, but today’s recipe is on the sweet side.  We shared this savory bacon and dried tomato scone recipe with you a few years ago.  It, too, is a delicious scone but would be better served along with a bowl of soup rather than as the star of an afternoon tea.

Orange Chocolate Scones

Ingredients

  • Heat oven to 425 degrees.
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup cold butter cut into cubes
  • Then mix together and add:
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • Brush the top with:
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 egg
  • More sugar for top

Instructions

  1. Combine first four ingredients and combine well with fork or whisk.
  2. Cut in cold butter. Mixture will be lumpy, and you should see small bits of butter.
  3. Combine milk and one egg and add to the flour mixture by pouring into the middle. Mix until milk is absorbed and flour is mixed in well.
  4. Dump the dough onto a floured surface and knead 20 times. Then roll or pat the dough to a 3/4 inch thickness. Keep moving the dough so it doesn't stick. Use a plain or fluted cutter to cut circles of dough. Use the scraps to make more scones.
  5. Place scones on a baking pan covered with parchment paper or silicone sheets.
  6. Bake 8 - 12 minutes.

Serve With Curd and Cream

This orange chocolate scones recipe can be easily doubled, and the scones also freeze well.  I always use this silicone sheet when I bake cookies or biscuits, and I highly recommend it.  It keeps things from burning and/or sticking.  Also, this recipe is basic enough that you can use any combination of fillers like any dried fruit and any type of nut or chocolate to make a completely different scone.  I made orange curd and whipped cream for the toppings.  Don’t you think a dried cherry and white chocolate chip scone would be a good treat to serve your loved ones in February?  The recipe would tie right in with that George Washington and the cherry tree story.  I bet you would make someone very happy, and you would enjoy eating it, too.  Have fun with this one, friends.

Take care.
