Today we continue to show you the rooms in our new house, and we are so happy to share the family room reveal. This room did not exist when we bought our new place. However, while I was out of town, Mike and our architect put their heads together, came up with a plan for to add a family room where the original patio was located, and then surprise me with the drawings when I came home. Friends, let me tell you that this space did not come easily. We had to knock out a brick wall, remove two existing fireplaces (the one in the family room and the one in the bedroom above it) hire three different cranes to get a custom-made steel beam in place, build a fake chimney to satisfy the historic commission, deal with weeks and weeks of rain that delayed the whole process, dig up our yard and landscaped courtyard when the plumber realized he didn’t run the gas line to the new gas fireplace and more. It was worth it, though. Get ready for lots of photos so grab a cup of coffee and settle in. Let’s take a look.
This is the view as we enter the room from through our Dutch door and mud room. We showed those spaces in this post. The wooden beam is actually large pieces of wood reclaimed from a New York City skyscraper. They are “wrapped” around the steel beam that we added, and they give the appearance of an old solid wooden beam. It’s one of the things everyone comments on when they come into the house. That is where the original brick wall stood. The sofa is where the original fireplace and chimney were located.
Here’s a view from the opposite side. The black floor lamp came from here.
We used the furniture we had in our last place with a few additions.
This side board was in the dining area before. I wanted to make it look less formal, so we added the cute plaid stools underneath. I purchased them here. The art above is an old French map of the United States. I bought it at a flea market in Paris and since we rode our bicycles across the country, it fits right in. The lamps are from Home Goods.
I also had a piece of glass cut for the top and plan to add some grasscloth wallpaper under the glass to take one more step to “dumb down” this piece of furniture. I’ve read that cherry furniture is out of vogue, but I really like this sideboard.
I love that the legs are the same hue as the seagrass rug which we purchased here. I bought the antique Persian rug in Atlanta at a blogging conference.
This new family room reveal shows that the room is long and narrow. It was built over the previous patio which they removed during construction. We used windows rather than French doors because I didn’t want a wall with two French doors and one Dutch door. The Dutch door won because it is my favorite door style. The windows look out into our new courtyard.
We still love our Samsung Frame television. I change the art frequently. I wrote about it in this post. You can purchase one here.
Our carpenters built the mantel to coordinate with the one in the dining room.
I love the monogrammed acrylic tray that I received as a Christmas gift. You can find it here. The candle is a bourbon/vanilla scent and smells delicious. Find a similar one here.
The family room opens up to the kitchen. You can see the island stools behind the sofa. This end table is a new purchase. You can find it here. The lamp came from Home Goods.
We are really enjoying this new space and hope you have enjoyed our family room reveal. The room suits our needs perfectly. We enjoy watching the news together while I cook dinner, and it’s a great place for movie and sports watching, too. I actually have another piece of furniture being delivered tomorrow for the room. We will be sure to show you it, too.
Take care.

Very pretty outcome! So welcoming !
Can you talk about the fireplace (real/vented, etc)? Thx!
Janette says
Kate, we removed the original wood burning fireplace when we tore out the wall. The new fireplace is an insert with gas logs. We bought them at Barnhill on Delaware Ave. The brick chimney that you see outside of this room is fake.
