As I promised last week, today I am giving you a little tour of our great room. This is the room that sees it all. We really live in there. It’s where we watch television, read, entertain guests, take naps, and pass through on our way in and out of the house. It is filled with light and has a wonderful view of our courtyard. It is a real room lived in by real people and decorated by me. It is wonderful in every season. Right now it is all comfy with kilim pillows, a comfy fire, and a big old cashmere throw. Come take a look.
The thing I like most about this room is that it is neutral, and I can change out the pillows to freshen it up and add some color. Just by looking at the photo, you can guess what my least favorite thing is. Right…..it’s the darn television over the fireplace. However, I do plan to get it camouflaged this year. Stay tuned for that. Those big lanterns on each side are perfect for winter, and they help anchor the television. They just happen to have been part of our Christmas decor that work for more than one season.
This is our view when we enter from the mudroom. By the way, I did not stage these photos. This is just a normal day in our house.
Right now I am using the kilim pillows that I bought on trips to Paris and Istanbul. They are getting popular. Using kilims is a great way to add some boho to our home for fun. Jordan and I bought the rug in Fez, Morocco when we were doing a big old bicycle trip in Africa. That trip was so harrowing for me, but the day that we were in Fez was one of my best days ever.
This is my favorite chair. It was custom made for Mr. Right. I might be getting it reupholstered this year because it has been sporting this fabric way longer than I want to admit. Usually in the winter I lean a pair of old wooden skis against the wall where you see the propeller, but right now they are in our sunroom.
This china cabinet became a book cabinet. I covered the back in removable wallpaper to add color. I know the trend is against Federal style cherry furniture, but if it dates me, so be it. I love this piece which is by Henkel Harris.
I might add some colorful shades to those lamps that I bought at HomeGoods. I looked for over a year to find just the right lamps for that sideboard. I did both of the paintings. Read about the large one here.
We eat here when we entertain, and I LOVE this table. It has two extensions so it can seat 10 people comfortably and was a great price. I try to keep items on it that make it look like a library table. This photo makes me think it needs some more books. I bought the bench at HomeGoods and had it upholstered with a colorful fabric that I just am crazy about.
I still love the curtains from Country Curtains that we close when entertaining. They’re a great way to hide the kitchen when we are seated at the table.
That’s the great room on a normal winter day. I hope you enjoyed the tour.
Take care.

Very pretty! I love the vintage with the new. (I especially like the propeller and your coffee table.) I am looking for a neutral couch. My house is full of cherry furniture and maybe it does date us….but I will just wait for it to come back in style. Thanks for sharing.

Kathy,
My neutral sofa was once a blue floral sofa. It had very good bones so I had it reupholstered.

So beautiful Janette. Your hutch/break front is gorgeous. It’s classic and in my opinion never goes out of style. Trends come and go but you can always count on the classics.

Thank you, Shirley. That means a lot coming from you.
