Victory!!! I have been looking for new lamps for the great room for several months, and I found them.
Ever since I moved these lamps from the great room’s side board to the side board in the kitchen, I have been on the search.
Then finally a few weeks ago I found these babies, and they were just what I was looking for.
I wanted lamps that were both tall and somewhat wide to take up some visual space. The mirror is huge, and the lamps needed to hold up to it.
Here’s the thing though. There’s a whole lot of beige going on, and I want to either paint the shades or add some bold trim to them. However, I’m not sure which way to go. It’s not out of fear. It’s because I really don’t know the right color for either paint or trim or both.
Should I pull a color out of this bench and paint the shades that color? Or would just a colorful trim be enough. Help!!!
I would love for you to give me your opinions on this. I’m at a stand-still on this one.
Thanks in advance.
Just as they are is beautiful. Live with them for a while until you decide to do something else. I love your pops of color but I also like the neutral woodsy look.
Your lamps are lovely. I would keep the shades as they are and hang plates above them for color to balance the height of the mirror.
Cathy, when I read the blog post after it was published (which I always do) I also thought some colorful plates would look good around the mirror. I still might paint the shades, too!
Ding! Ding! Ding! Excellent lamp bases! I’ve been looking for some to replace a pair of 15-ish year-old candlesticks from Crate & Barrel. There are some similar turned wood Threshold bases from Target that I like. But back to color. Definitely yes, you need to repeat that beautiful red + blue throughout the room. I have a pair of PB white shades with horizontal red ticking stripes, but they’re no longer available. You could replicate that look, though, with stenciling or hot gluing ribbons. Good luck! Share more!
Kay,if the lamp shades were drum shaped, adding ribbon would be easy. Their shape will make it a little more difficult. It’s a great suggestion. Will you help me???
My personal opinion is the lighter blue!
Love the shape of those lamps! I see what you mean….that is rather beige. Your dining area is part of your great room…right? I guess I’d pull the most common color out of the great room. Our living/dining room is L shaped. I decorate them with just about the same colors, but one extra color that is different from the living room, is in the dining area. It still reads as one room. Is there a color in the bench, that is also in the great room? Hope that helps! 😉
Thank you, Donnamae
I really love how these look. I would add finials for balance a decorative piece over the mirror rather than plates
Janette, what ever you decide will look great, trust your instincts. For my “two cents” – consider black shades, they will add visual weight and not fight the other colors in the room. I have similar lamps that I changed the original burlap colored shaded for black and have been pleased with the result. I enjoy reading your blog.
They look great! I think black shades would be bold/cool, but love all the ideas friends have shared with you – wouldn’t have thought of drawing eyes with colorful plates. Excited to see you soon!!
I love those lamps just the way they are. The linen shades look classy and expensive. I read your post the following day and thought you might add trim to the lamps shades on either side of the couch. If you attached the trim using tiny straight pins you could change it throughout the seasons. The room is lovely.
