We celebrated our latest wedding anniversary by having dinner at a new restaurant here in Lexington called The Lockbox. It is located in the 21C boutique hotel/art museum. I am a one-drink girl, and because of that, I like to make the cocktail or glass of wine that I drink before a dinner something special. They had a beverage on the menu called a “Tattletale”, and the description sounded so good that it’s the one I chose. I enjoy gin, and this cocktail was a combination of gin, grapefruit juice, lime juice, and a splash of simple syrup along with a sprig of fresh thyme. The thyme gave it a unique flavor. This past week-end when our family was here, I decided to create our version of a tattletale, and of course, we had to share it with you. I was afraid that if I called it a tattletale in today’s headline, that you wouldn’t have a clue what I was talking about, but now you know.
TATTLETALE
Makes 5 servings
1 can frozen grapefruit juice,
1/2 lime
1 cup simple syrup
5 2-ounce shots of gin
8 sprigs fresh thyme
Ice
First, make a thyme infused simple syrup by combing a cup of sugar and a cup of water. Then add 3 sprigs of fresh thyme that you have briskly rubbed together in order to bring out their flavor. Cook the mixture until the sugar melts, and then remove it from the heat and let it cool. Strain the syrup before using to remove the thyme.
Mix grapefruit juice following the directions on the can. Pour it into a pitcher.
Add 5 tablespoons simple syrup.
Add juice from 1/2 lime
For each drink, fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add 2 ounces gin and 1 cup of juice mixture. Shake. Pour over ice and add a sprig of thyme.
If you want your drink to be sweeter, add more simple syrup. If you want it to be more tart, add more lime juice.
