How to Make Small Art Look Larger

By Jordan | Decorating, Projects, Things We Bought

First of all, thanks to all of you who made comments and sent emails about yesterday’s post it really made us smile reading all the kind words for the new addition to our family.  One of the features of Little Miss’s room that was an easy DIY project was making the small elephant art look larger.  We wanted to hang an elephant painting or giraffe painting over the twin-sized day bed, but they were all too small.  Then my mom suggested that I buy a larger canvas, paint it, and attach the smaller canvas to it.  Mom’s friend Carolyn gave her that idea when we gave this painting as a gift.

We bought the elephant canvas at Homegoods, but we found these here and here if you are interested in buying one for your home.  The original elephant painting measured 22 by 28 inches.    You can tell from the photo that it would have disappeared even with a frame.  So, I bought a white canvas that measured 36 by 48 inches.

Then I applied  one coat of paint using regular craft paint.  The first coat was too yellow, so I added some white to soften it and painted it again.  I let it dry a few hours before going on to the next step.

In order for the art to be centered on the canvas, I measured and marked the edges with painter’s tape.  For the last step, I attached Command strips to the art, and then stuck it to the canvas.  It’s important to have it all centered properly before this last step, because once the art is attached to the canvas, it’s there forever.

On a more serious note, my 93-year-old grandfather is having major surgery today.  We would appreciate your prayers for him.  Mom has been here all week helping me paint our kitchen cabinets, and she is driving to his hospital in Virginia today to spend a week.  To get a taste of what my grandfather is like, read this post that my mom wrote last year.

Cheers!

Thanks for the shout out gals! (Both times!) Hope you both have a wonderful and blessed Easter weekend despite the worry of your grandfather/father. I will be sure to keep him in my prayers.

    XO,
    Carolyn
