The Glass Ceiling and More

By Janette | Out and About

You all……It has been a whirlwind rat race around here lately.  Basically, I haven’t had time to scratch.  And even though I could be excommunicated from Blogland, I am admitting publicly that I haven’t purchased the first annual, herb, or veggie for my courtyard garden.  Yes, I’ve been that busy.

It all started when Mr. Right and I went to his home in Indiana to begin the process of moving his mother from the family farm in the country to a townhouse near his sister in town.  He bought the townhouse and hired a crew to completely repaint all surfaces, lay hardwoods, install new appliances, lay new bathroom flooring, etc.  You get the picture.  I helped in the selection process, and we’ll be sharing photos of the revamped space soon.  Jordan will be visiting Grandma next week to help, and she’ll take photos for us of the clean, fresh look.

Mr. Right and I were home a day, and then we drove to St. Charles, MO where we, along with our bicycles, hopped on the Amtrak train.  We got off near Clinton and spent last week riding our bicycles back to St. Charles.  We took five days to pedal the 250 miles and stayed in bed and breakfasts and hotels each evening.  The weather was perfect.

As soon as I washed off all of the dirt from the ride, I got to put on my Sunday best and attend a fashion show put on by the Lexington Philharmonic Guild, an organization I have belonged to for over 15 years.  Over 200 ladies were there, and it was a great  time. (I’m still trying to perfect the selfie, by the way).

The venue, floral arrangements, silent auction, style show, music, food, and company were the best.  Aren’t these little tuxedo desserts the cutest things ever???

And I wouldn’t be a good blogger if I didn’t show you the rose purse centerpieces.  They were mixed in with very tall arrangements.  But meanwhile back at the ranch townhouse, my laundry room is stacked to the ceiling with dirty clothes and needs clearance from the E.P.A., the house is in shambles, and not a project has been completed.  I did find time, though, to wash my glass ceiling.

You can sort of get a look at it in this old photo that I showed you on Monday.  (This was taken before the tree was chopped down).  The top of the sun room is glass, and pollen season takes its toll on it.  The sun has a real hard time getting through all of the residue.  Two years ago I paid a man $50.00 to wash that baby, but I decided that I am handy enough to do it myself.

I took a sudsy bucket of water to our master bedroom, which is on the second floor overlooking the sun room.

Then I opened the windows as much as possible.  Don’t worry.  I didn’t crawl out onto the roof.  (That’s our neighbor’s courtyard you are seeing in this photo, by the way).

I loaded the mop with some of that sudsy water.

Then I leaned out the window as far as possible and scrubbed away.  It was actually fun.

Once it got to the point that I couldn’t reach any farther, I took the bucket and mop down to the courtyard and carried in the ladder.  Then I just climbed up there, scrubbed the rest, and hosed it down until all of the suds were gone.  Presto.  The glass ceiling shines like a diamond ring.  Unfortunately, taking a photo of it in all of its clean glory is easier said than done.  There’s a glare, so you’ll just have to take my word for it.  Whew!  I have a huge feeling of accomplishment.  Now I think it’s time to go buy some flowers.

Take care.
