Stained Glass Window Plaques

Years ago a very old gentleman in his eighties gave my mother a few of his family keepsakes.  Among there were four stained and leaded glass herb window hangings.  My mother used them till she and my father down-sized, and then she passed them along to me.

I didn’t have the proper window lay-out to use them until now.  A few of our rooms have transom windows over French doors, and the kitchen transom provides the perfect place to display them.

This transom is over the French doors that go into our all-glass sunroom.  The window hangings get the perfect light here.

There are four plaques in four different colors, and each shows an herb.

The colors are so vivid.

The dill is on smokey pink glass.

Based on the gentleman’s age at the time and my mother’s age now, (sorry, Mother), they are easily over 100 years old.

Even though I am not fond of sage, the sage plaque is my favorite.

For cleaning, I simply wiped them with a damp paper towel.

The amethyst glass used for the sweet bay is beautiful.

Sweet Bay is not a common herb to grow these days.  Martha Stewart is the only person I know of who grows her own.

I replaced the rusty wire holders that were on them with some thin jute. It looks much nicer. I also made sure the suction cups are very-well attached to the windows.

These unusual hangings are a colorful and welcome addition to our new kitchen.
