Happy Friday!! We hope you all have some fun plans for the week-end. Now that it is summer, I find myself making smoothies frequently for either my breakfast or lunch. They are easy to make, and when made right, they are loaded with lots of good-for-you foods.
There have been reports lately about the high calorie/high sugar contents of many smoothies. Some folks automatically think nutritious when they see a smoothie shop, but you might be getting the same calories that you would get from a milkshake and the same amount of nutrition, too.
My smoothies are easy, and I thought it would be a great recipe to share with you today. Of course, you can omit the yogurt if you want to make them paleo. This is what I do:
NUTRIOUS SMOOTHIE
– 1 banana, cut in chunks (this works better if the banana if frozen)
– A handful of frozen strawberries (I wash and hull them and toss them in a freezer bag to use when I need them.)
– 1 container of yogurt (I use Greek)
– 1 cup orange juice
– 5 or 6 ice cubes
I toss all of these ingredients in a blender and blend away for about one minutes. When it is just the right thickness, I pour it in a glass, add a straw, and sip away. This recipe has about 350 calories and no fat.

We LOVE smoothies at our house too! I haven’t tried one with Greek yogurt yet but I’m going to now! 🙂

I also freeze my local fresh-picked Michigan strawberries for the best-tasting smoothies.

This is the same recipe that my students made in the foods lab – so healthy & easy.! Lately, I’ve been using kale, greek yogurt, cranberry juice and any kind of fruit on hand – pineapple, kiwi, pears & bananas are my favorites.
