Map a Letter

By Jordan | Projects

Using letters as wall art is quite the trend now, and we have joined right in.  Large letters are everywhere in our home.  I have used them to make a statement in our dining room and even on our gallery wall.

Do you see the “H”?  We love the letter “H” around here since it is the initial of our last name and  my maiden name. However, I was getting tired of the plain black “H”.

Originally, we painted it with black acrylic paint last year.  We added a few tacks to make it look industrial, but it’s time to move on.

Whoops!  I didn’t realize till now that I never painted the bottom……oh well.  Anyway, since we do love our traveling, I thought I would wrap the “H” in a map, thanks to some inspiration I got from the Urban Outfitters website.  Theirs was $12.00.  Mine was free because I had part of a map of the United States left over from another project so I decided to use it.  I picked the midwest area because the colors were bright.

It was super easy to just trace, cut, and paste.  I followed up with some Mod Podge.  You could really get creative with these letters.  If I wanted to do a “J” for my name, I could have done Kentucky where I was raised.  Mr. Spring could have done a “C” and a map of New York or even New York City where he grew up.  Basically, the options are endless.

The updated “H” is now on the gallery wall.  This was an easy change, and I am happy with the new look.  I took the easy route and used a map I had on hand, but you could even make color copies of a map in a book or on-line.

What map would you use to cover your inital?

Perfect timing. I love this idea! I am redoing my boys room and have covered one child’s in just and am trying to decide what to do with the other. Right now it is done to match his room when he was a baby and he is now 7! I think he will love the map idea – thank you so much for the inspiration.
