The Last Rose of Summer

By Janette | Uncategorized

I hope that this will be a better week for our country than last week was.  Jordan and I have followed the news like everyone else, and the despair that people are feeling really reminds us of what is truly important in life.

When I was growing up, a phrase my mother always used when she was tired was “Oh, I look like the last rose of summer,” or “Oh, I feel like the last rose of summer.”

Yesterday while spending some time in our courtyard, I snipped off a few blossoms that were holding on to life.  Two little pansies, a sprig of rosemary, a fern frond, and literally the last rose of summer made the sweetest little bouquet.

I placed it on a little rustic green step stool that I use as an end table in our great room.  It is paired with an old piece of silver and a little sea shell, another reminder of summer.

Another way to preserve a little bit of summer is with this dried hydrangea arrangement I put together at a garden club meeting.

The muted colors fit in perfectly with our fall decorations.

It fits perfectly in this bread crock that my niece and nephew gave me years ago for Christmas.  You can actually bake a loaf in this handmade pot.

This is all making me think that looking like the last rose of summer might not be a bad thing afterall.

Take care.

My favorite restaurant has this type of bouquet. I am uncomfortable when I have to make conversation over the top a large centerpiece. Although the large ones are beautiful I think it distracts and competes with the meal. I watched a Barefoot Contessa episode that had just one small flower like yours that contained each guests favorite flower, She used it as their “place card.”

The last rose of summer has been blown off the stem by the wind and rain – but fall has its compensations and we’ve been enjoying the wild fall tides and the changing leaves.

Oh your bouquet is beautiful! I am always sorry to see the roses stop blooming for the Winter but Oh I so look forward to seeing the first blooms of the Spring!
