Adding Beauty to My Day

By Janette | Uncategorized

I am not a big fan of toast.  It is kind of a boring breakfast to me.  However, if I have to eat it, I will always turn it into cinnamon toast.

One of the lessons I learned from a favorite author of mine, Alexandra Stoddard, is that we should try to turn mundane everyday rituals into something special so that we will have beauty in our lives daily.

I have attempted to do so by premixing my cinnamon and sugar and storing them in this little antique shaker.

My mother gave it to me several years ago, and she dutifully told me, “Don’t break it”.  That is code for “it’s valuable so hide it away in a cabinet, let it gather dust, and never use it”.

She should know by now that everything in our house gets used.  If it’s here, I’m using it.

Even though the top is aged and rough, it is clean.  The holes are oversized because, I have been told, it was originally used for powdered sugar.

Its roughness might put some people off, but what I know is that I am lovin’ it, I’m usin’ it, and I’m adding some beauty to my day.

How do you add beauty to your day?  We would love to know.

Take care.

I feel the same way. Use it so you get to enjoy it and so other people will have memories of your things.

I have slowly been taking out my “precious things” and using them…to enjoy them and thus makes me smile!!…Your sugar shaker is gorgeous…it has to make the toast taste so much better!!..

My wife shares the same “Use It” mantra. Most things in our home are on display and available to use. My wife thinks if it is packed away and forgotten you might as well sell it. My mother collected china and glassware and seldom used them. They were “too nice to use” or “would get broken”. When she passed away she had so much to choose from but so few memories of having used the dish or art piece. We are making memories now. I use Mom’s silver iced tea spoons and her hobnail cakeplate for any occasion. Her Fiesta bowls hold potted geraniums on the porch. So pretty.

I love that! I totally agree about not keeping those “special” things hidden away. I think they were meant to be enjoyed.
