Pssst……Hey, I have a secret to tell you, but you must promise not to tell. I defaced public property, but it was all for the love of decorating. If I get taken to the big house, start baking those cakes now. I’ll need several files, including one for my nails.
It all started when my mom and I revamped my back porch. We were in the slap-happy spray paint mode when we glanced over and saw this guy, one of my three recycle bins. He was just too ugly to put back on the porch after we spent hours making it look so much better. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.
Our intentions were good. We thought that if we painted the bin the same shade of gray as the wall of our porch, it would blend in better.
First, we primed it and then used some left over gray spray paint that I had in my stash. We painted over the part that said, “Property of the City of Syracuse”. Yikes!!! However, we couldn’t just stop there, could we? We painted another one, but it gets worse (or maybe I should say better).
I found some large letter stencils that were also in my stash, and we stenciled RECYCLE on the sides. That’s all there was to it. Amount of money spent – zero. Visual impact – limitless.
In case you can’t see it because it is blending in so well, it’s there to the right of the empty bookshelf/future boot holder. It looks so much better than its old self would have looked wearing its royal blue garb. I think the trash men will love me. I will be adding beauty to their day. If everyone does this, we might just start a movement. Pretty trash day for all!!!

What a fun idea…I would never think of that! The bookcase looks great and it’s such a perfect size!
Thanks for stopping by my blog. Gives a whole new look at recyling.
I hope they still pick it up! I think they drive by looking for blue containers, and they might miss yours!
Pam,
They picked it up last week so I am good to go! Hopefully they will continue to pick up.
Oh, good! I know around here they just look for blue and if they don’t see it, they don’t pick it up. That could be because our city has contracted out the recycling. Our trash is picked up by county employees, but it’s a private company that picks up our recycling.
I am going to decorate a blank tub for my recycling with vinyl letters cut on my Cricut. Hopefully, it will put a smile on my collector’s faces, too!
Where is the ‘like’ button?!
I Love it!! I’ve never thought of decorating an old trash bin.
I like the new paint job and think it will continue to get picked up. Now if you painted it grass green they could have missed it.
Does over-spray from spray painting my white garden bench count as “defacement”?
The dark green with white misty design looks very nice.

Oh it turned out so cute!! That is such a great idea that I am going to have to so something like that for our items that we recycle!
Great idea! Our trash & recycling are hidden away in the garage. If I ever relocate them somewhere more visible, I’ll definitely have to try this!
I LOVE THIS IDEA!!! It looks soooo much better!! Thank you for stopping by my blog, so now Ihave yours!!!
Pretty cute.
Can you still blog from the “slammer”?
