The Kids’ Bathroom

By Janette | Before and After, Decorating, Projects

I wish we could just sit down together with a cup of tea, and I could tell you all that’s going on at our new place.  But since that’s not going to happen, this is the next best thing.  Today I want to show you where we are headed with the kids’ bathroom on the third floor.  Just to remind you, the third floor is one of the reasons we bought our new place.  It will be a perfect space for our grandkids to sleep, play, and hang out.  There’s a small bathroom up there with a shower, skylight, and nice linen closet, and I’m going to have a little fun with it.  All of the other bathrooms will have the same tiles, cabinets, countertops, and faucets.  While this room will have the same faucet design, it will be different in other ways.

(before demo)

The third floor was once an attic, and so I am treating the bathroom as if it is in an old attic space.  First off, everything from the old bathroom has been removed, including the soffit, and the old skylight was replaced with a new one when the new roof was installed.  So, right now it is a blank canvas.  It is a small bath and so there will be a small shower, a toilet, a and a sink.  There’s a nice linen closet with lots of shelves so we will have a place for toiletries and linens.

I have spent more time selecting the tile for the floor, shower floor, and shower walls than on any other decision I have made for the house so far.  I wanted it to look like an old attic bath floor, but I just was having trouble coming up with a combination that I liked.  I am not using traditional 3 x 6 inch subway tile, and so that automatically limits my choices.  It seems as if everything is made to go with subway tile. What I chose for the floor is this 12 x 24 porcelain tile by Daltile.  I has the look of Carrara marble without the attitude.  My decorating friend said the larger tile will make the room appear larger.

This hex porcelain mosaic also by Daltile will go on the shower floor.  I love it.  All of the tile has a honed finish so it won’t be slippery.

I chose this wonderful vanity base.  If you have young children in your household and are planning to redo a bathroom, then you will love knowing about this vanity.  The base pulls out and becomes a step for children to stand on.  That eliminates the need for a step stool that might topple over, and it will keep the kids from standing on a pulled out drawer.  Yikes!  The sink top is just white porcelain and is sold separately.

All of the faucets in the house will be from the same line, and I love this Victorian line by Delta.  Our finish will be chrome like the photo.  We actually had it in our last house, and I loved it then and still do.

Since I think old attic bathrooms would have had beadboard, we are installing classic beadboard either half or three-fourths of the way up the wall.  Our rental apartment is over 100 years old, and the owners kept some of the original beadboard when they remodeled our unit last fall.  It’s a timeless look that I love.

And to top off the beadboard, we will add some navy and white gingham wallpaper or a navy ticking stripe wallpaper.  Navy, which is my favorite color, will be sprinkled throughout the house.  We showed you this photo, which is from BHG, in the Saturday Selections a few weeks ago.  The gingham wall is painted, but I don’t have the skills, patience, or desire to paint that pattern on our walls.  So, we will definitely stick with wallpaper (no pun intended.)  We would love to hear what you think of this plan for the little room.

Take care.

I love your ideas…you two are so talented! Bead board is one of my favorites and I hope to use it when I redo my upstairs.

I can’t wait to see it…it sounds perfect. I think either wallpaper would look great. It sounds like you are having fun with this…super! 😉

I think the kids will like the big bold check more than the more subdued ticking. It’s just fun!!!

Love that vanity with pull-out. I have those little stools for grandchildren in most of our bathrooms and they are always in the way. What a great solution and space saver.
    Great tip!
