Bathroom Storage

By Jordan | Before and After, Projects

When we were first house hunting, we wanted a three/two meaning three bedrooms and two baths.  Well, it turns out the houses we really liked  didn’t have two baths.  We were lucky enough to get one full bath and a half bath, and considering this house was built in 1928, we were thrilled.  We do know a family with three children once lived here for years so it can be done.  Plus, that means there’s less to clean!  And remember, even though old houses are charming, they are known for having minimal storage space.  So, since we only have one full bathroom, and it is small, we need to be creative with storage in there.

Yankee told me we had some wasted space above our bathroom door where a shelf could go.  I thought that was a great way to make use of some wasted space.

Here is another view of it.  The door might not look straight, and that is one of the charms of an old house.  Our house has had some settling.  She is 80 plus years old, and I have a feeling I won’t be standing as straight as I am now when I become an octogenarian.

Since we were going to be making some changes in the bathroom anyway, I decided to change the color during the process.  It is oyster pearl by Clark and Kennsington from Ace, but we had Home Depot match it to their Behr paint.  We love it.

You can probably see from this photo that my husband attached a support board to the wall and then built a box to sit on top of it.  He then trimmed the exterior with straight boards that match the rest of the trim in our house, which is a craftsman style. This is before the nail holes were filled and caulking was done.

This is the after the shelf is finished but before we put it to use.   I am loving the extra space.

The shelf is great for holding all of our extra towels.

So if you have a small bathroom or are  just looking for extra storage, this shelf might be for you.  I do have to give all credit to Yankee, who built and painted and did the finishing touches.  I encouraged along the way, though.

Love ideas for small spaces, and bathrooms are always difficult. This is a winner for sure.

What a super clever idea! I have teeny tiny baths in my house too and now the wheels are turning as I envision some creative storage solution ideas …

that is a great idea! We had 1 full and 1 half bathroom until few months ago, when we added a shower to the half bathroom…needless to say, we have 3 children ages 4 and under, and we were doing just fine with the 1 and 1/2 baths 🙂 Again, I might steal this over the door idea!

Very smart of you, now I just wish I had a bathroom or space I could use something like this! Love it!

I love this idea and who can’t use more space? I may have to see how I can make that work in our tiny upstairs bath.
