Getting Control of My Stripes

By Janette | Before and After, Decorating

Greetings, everyone!  We hope you had a great week-end.  I spent way too much time dealing with a television  issue and waiting on the repairman.  I did get to do some good bicycle riding, and our son and daughter-in-law were in town for what sounds like a wonderful wedding.  (I wanted to be a fly on the wall.)  Recently I showed you a new to me chair that I purchased at a local antique shop.  One of the things that attracted me to the chair was the Ralph Lauren fabric with its colorful stripes.  But upon closer inspection, there were a few smudges on those stripes that I didn’t like.  After all, who wants to deal with someone else’s dirt?  Right?  I’m all for buying used furniture, but if I can’t clean it up, then I have problems.

I am crazy about stripes (and plaid, and gingham, and herringbone, etc.), but they had gotten out of control in the master bedroom where the newly purchased chair ended up.  It became stripe overload after I recently bought the new to me Turkish rug for our kitchen.  I moved the rug that had been there to our bedroom.  We also have stripes on the bed skirt and a few pillows that I use have stripes.  It was total overload.

I decided that the best way to solve this little situation was to replace the fabric on the chair with a nice blue and cream herringbone that I found at our local fabric shop.  (I went for a full-priced item this time, though).  It was something I easily could do because it just amounted to unscrewing the chair bottom, removing the fabric and staples, and replacing it with new fabric and staples.

I also decided not to use the top cushion.  Recovering it would require bringing in the professionals since my skill set on switching up chair fabric is limited.  Instead I used the extra fabric from the yard I purchased to make a fluffy pillow with a down insert.

This time I added a little detail to the envelope back.

I love the way it turned out.

It goes perfectly with the curtains and the cream love seat and the stripes in the bed skirt.

I didn’t plan it this way, but it even looks great with the bedroom’s art.  By the way, I love the mixture of traditional furniture with contemporary art.  I did this painting about a year ago, and it fits right in with the whole scheme of things.

Thanks so much for stopping in.  We are excited by what we have to share with you this week.  By the way, if you want to keep up with us in another way, please, please follow us on Instagram.  We were late getting to that party, and we really would love to have more of you joining us over there.

Take care.

Love the way the chair looks and how well it all goes together. I love stripes, plaid and checks, too as you know.
