Writing this blog with my mom has been so much fun. Not only does it keep us close when we live so far away, but it has really increased my interest in decor and design. A lot of this came from being around my mom, but even in college I remember hitting up garage sales with my best friend to find a deal and paint some furniture to give it a new look for my place. Recently, I decided I wanted to learn even more, so I signed up for an online design school.
I did a lot of research and discovered New York Institute of Art and Design. This program recently had a name change from Sheffield to NYIAD. I am focusing on the interior design program. It had great reviews, and I can work at my own pace. I do have projects to turn in, and those projects keep me accountable and force me to have somewhat of a timeline to work on my assignments.
While it is an online course, I have text books and cd/dvd lessons. Each unit has some projects that I have to do. For example, unit one was a rough sketch of drawing a living room. Moving along, I am now drawing a living room to scale and working with furniture placement. I am starting with the basics and growing with each unit. I have to thank my neighbor Jennifer for letting me use her living room for my assignments.
They are also great about teaching about furniture designs, styles, and green design.
I have had fun with the color exercises that I have done for some of my assignments.
All of these supplies were included with units one and two, so I am learning how to use the tools of the trade, also. Once my project is reviewed by the instructor, she emails me a recording going over what I did right and what I might need to work on. I never thought I would have so much homework! The biggest fear that Mom and I have about this course is that now we will learn what we have been doing wrong all along. And will we want to change everything in our houses? Our husbands hope not!!!
So here’s a question for you: If you could go back to school, what would you want to learn?
Cheers!
I was not paid by NYIAD I am just a fan!

Sounds like a fun start for your Design interest. I have always loved design and spent many years working with clients and their homes and businesses. I wish for you the joy that I had then and continue to have in design!

I have been toying with either going back to design school or getting my real estate license (since I love both) and would love to hear your feedback on this program. How much time it takes, if you really think you are growing as a designer, etc.
I’ll definitely be following along.. please keep us updated!
Keep reading, Kim. I will definitely be writing updates.
