With just a little effort, it is easy to update a garage door. When we moved into our house, I was a little hesitant about having a detached garage. After living with it now for almost four years, I now do not think I would go to an attached version. Yes, on all of those snowy and rainy days it would be nice, but I feel I actually know my neighbors better by not having an attached garage. Anytime I am going to my garage and my neighbors are outside, it is nice to say hello and check in on how they are doing. It really adds to that cozy neighborhood feel. Although our garage is not connected to our house, I still want it to look cute at least for us to enjoy.
Here is our basic garage. When we moved in, we had the original old heavy garage door. It really took some muscle to lift it up and down, and since it worked, we just kept it. However, one New Year’s eve when we were about to leave for New York City, our car was stuck in the garage because the door wouldn’t budge. Luckily, we found a company who was able to get our car out. That following week we added electricity to the garage and a new plain white door that opens with the touch of a button.
Then one day while at my local hardware store, I noticed some accessories designed to decorate a garage door. They also are available online, and you can see some of them here. They were very reasonably priced, and I bought them. The bad blogger part of me promptly put them on a shelf in our garage where they stayed for a year. Whoops!
While we were doing some organizing in our garage this summer, we found them and decided to put them up right away.
This project really didn’t take that long. Yankee (yes I have decided to change Mr. Spring’s name to Yankee which is what I call him on a day to day basis) marked the holes in the garage and did the installation. This was all completed during half time of a World Cup soccer game.
It just adds a little something, and it was a perfect way to update our garage door. Plus, it looks great with the exterior of our house.
I want to add some hanging ferns next year so it will be even more charming. Is there anything you have done to spiff up your garage?
Cheers!
Next step is you can actually change out that top panel of the garage with a panel with glass….that would look great. Glad I am not the only one that the idea sits on a shelf in the garage. Good going…looks good.
Patricia,
I like that idea of a panel with glass. I joke with my husband saying lets tear it down and build a whole new garage with a movie theatre room above the garage. I guess I can get carried away with my daydreaming, even for a garage!
Cheers!
I love, love that look…the doors look great…
Jordan it looks so good! What a great way to update a garage door.
