Well, howdy!!! It’s so great to be writing a blog post again. Jordan and I stock-piled three weeks worth of blog entries before we left. Whew!!! Well, almost three weeks worth. Thanks so much to Amber and Lauren for guest-posting. We hope you checked them out.
This headline is true. The joke really is on me. I thought that we could go away to India (that was the Taj Mahal in yesterday’s photo, by the way) and come back to crocuses blooming and spring in the air.
But instead, I’m looking at this out my window this March morning. I remember, though, that when I was a ten-year old and in the sixth grade, my maternal grandmother died unexpectedly on March 4. That day I wore shorts because it was so warm outside. The next day it snowed 36 inches. Spring snows don’t normally hold back. They show us all they’ve got!!
So, to show spring who’s boss, I bought six daffodil blossoms at the grocery this morning. I am trying to force them to open, but these little blossoms just aren’t ready to wake up.
I paired the flowers with this antique post card that has a spring look to it. These old cards always bring a smile to my face, and I can usually find one in my stash that fits the message I’m feeling.
This paper mache box that I picked up on the last day of our trip also has a cheery, spring-like vibe going on.
Tomorrow they will probably be at their best, but today is just not the day they are supposed to be open. That’s okay. I’m a patient gal.
Even though I’m trying to force spring in the great room, this bowl of homemade tomato soup sans croutons (I used my girl Ina’s recipe here), sure tasted fine. And as an aside, I have a new girl crush on a cooking show chef whom I discovered on our trip. Have you heard of Rachel Khoo (here)? I ordered her cookbook, and it was waiting for me when I got home. Oh, la, la!!! Can’t wait to get started on that one.
And before I go, I need to ask for your help/suggestions. It’s time to say adieu to the yellow paint on the guest room walls. I’m ready to paint it a nice neutral with a touch of gray/blue/cream. If any of you have a color you love, please leave its name/manufacturer in the comments. Thanks! Oh, do you see the hat hanging on the bed? That belonged to my grandmother mentioned above. It was her summer church hat, and she ordered it from the Sears-Roebuck catalog.
Love the new colorful box. If you want a pretty off white I love Linen White by Benjamin Moore. If you want a pretty gray that is Gray Owl also by Benjamin Moore.
I’ve seen Gray Owl and like it.
I love the idea of a gray-blue for this room. Most of what you have in there will look lovely with that color (unless you are really going to overhaul everything!). Thank you for sharing your sweet memories of your grandmother.
Janette,
My mom used to say you can’t rush Spring , but once it is here it will stay. Even if it snows again the snow can’t stay long.
Mom would watch for the bulbs to bloom and her forsithia to bud and know Spring was there.
I can’t see tulips or daffodils without thinking of mom. Thanks
rick
Thanks for sharing. She sounds like a great lady.
But yellow is such a springy colour! I’ve just painted our bedroom Silver Quill and love it! It changes with the light from gray to blue and is still light and airy.
I’ll check out Silver Quill. Thanks for the suggestion.
Take a look at BM Palladian Blue. I’m not a blue person…but this is a really lovely color. We did our guest room in it, and then have red curtains, and love it!
We already have that color in the laundry room and powder room. I LOVE it!!! I am using red accessories in the powder room with it. (Great minds think alike.) However, I want something a little more subtle for the guest room. Thanks for the suggestion.
Wow!!
I remember the hat.
