When I am not on the road for work, I have the privilege of working from home. It is great, but my office is a true working office. That means there can be papers on the desk, and files of multiple projects on hand. My file cabinet gets lots of use and as much as I would like to be paperless, that isn’t happening at this point.
I have had this boring black file cabinet for almost five years. It is the perfect size and gets the job done. Plus, at one point it held my printer.
Since we have been adding new shelves and making the office more appealing, I decided the file cabinet was too dark. Plus, I needed something painted in my office, and the file cabinet would be an easy fix.
This might be the easiest piece I have ever painted. I removed the handles and went to town.
The key to painting a metal cabinet is to use an oil primer. I actually did two coats of oil-based primer. As much as I do not like working with oil paint, I feel it made all the difference in how well this cabinet is holding up. After the primer I used regular latex paint that I had on hand and painted away.
At first I thought about getting new handles, but I got these labels and decided they would work. They were only a couple of dollars, and they stick right on the cabinet.
Ta-dah!!! This simple project helped turn a boring file cabinet into something with a little more spunk.
Not only is the cabinet now holding lots of papers, but I am also using it as a side table to the sofa in the office/study. I have been using it for a couple of months as a side table, and it is holding up quiet well without chips or dings.
Now, are you ready to update the file cabinet in your place?
Cheers!
