How to Make a Tea Cozy

By Janette | Projects

I have taken advantage of these cold days by doing some organizing in my craft room.  One of the items at the bottom of a pile was an old tea cozy that I bought when Jordan and I took a long week-end in England a few years ago.  It was stained, faded, and had seen a better day.  I kept it, though, thinking it would make a good pattern if I ever decided to make a new one.  Just seeing it was all the inspiration I needed to get to work.  I quickly watched a You Tube video on how to make a tea cozy and followed her directions.

I decided to use a remnant of fabric left over from the pillows  I made for our foyer.  First, I used the old tea cozy to draw the cutting line.  I made this new cozy taller because a few of my teapots are tall.

I decided to use the same fabric for the liner, so I cut out four sections.

I didn’t have any batting to use between the layers, but I did have a white towel that had a hole in it.  I cut out two pieces that would work perfectly as the inner layer.

Then I sewed the edges together and trimmed off the excess fabric.

The next step was to sew the lining to the bottom of the cozy.

When the lining was attached, I put the right sides together and pinned them at the seams.  Then I sewed the two pieces together.

I left an opening so I could pull the right side out.

After I pulled it through, I stitched the opening shut and ironed the completed cozy.

Because it looked too plain, I added an old pin to the front to dress it up a little.  Since this was really just a practice run, I was fine with the way it turned out.  However, on the next one I would add a little tab to the top to make lifting it off of the hot tea pot easier.  Also, I think a monogram might look nice on the front.

It definitely will keep my pot of tea hot, though.

It’s a major improvement over the old stained one.

And I know it will fit all of my Hall’s teapots.

Take care.

I am addicted to your blog! Great Post! Looking forward to get more information from you. I have an older home with so many ideas in my head, but I also have 2 little ones that make doing things difficult. So for now I will decorate vicariously through you!
