I can sum my week-end up in two words: class reunion. Yep. You all have been there – right???? Well, I am here to report a good time was had by all. Even Mr. Right enjoyed it. He is such a good sport. I grew up in a tiny little town, and there were only 59 seniors in my graduating class. We received a great education, had a great time, and made our mamas proud.
This is my friend Susan who went on to be a registered nurse and a medical administrator. Thank goodness they gave us all nametags with our senior photos on them so we could more easily remember names and what we used to look like.
This is the 17-year-old me. It was back in the day of Twiggy, and I tried to copy her hair style. Oh, what I wish I could tell that girl. If I could write a letter to my 17-year-old self, these are just a few of the things I would tell her:
– Don’t worry so much about that chemistry grade. The closest you’ll ever get to using chemistry in your adult life is baking and mixing drinks. Ditto for algebra. On the other hand, you should have paid more attention to history because you really will enjoy it in your future. Visiting historical homes and learning about famous historical people will be a favorite past time. Be glad you enjoyed geography because you will use it – a lot.
– You know that boy you really, really like? Well, in two years, he is going to dump you. What you won’t know then, though, is that he did you a major favor and paved the way for you to meet Mr. Right. If you ever see him again, thank him.
– Your parents were right. Getting an education was the most important thing to do for yourself. Also, minding your manners will always be important, and strive to be a good girl. You’ll run into some mean girls along the way, and good girls are always better. You also don’t know it, but your parents will live a long, healthy, and active life, and you will benefit from their presence for many, many wonderful years to come.
You will have two amazing children. You will do anything in the world for them. I know it is hard for a 17-year-old to imagine that, but it is true. They will rock your world.
You were really upset when you weren’t selected to be editor of the high school paper, but that’s okay, too. You will get a degree in journalism, work as a newspaper reporter, and go on to teach writing. Eventually, you will be an editor of something called a blog. It’s kind of hard to describe, but there will be something called the internet, and you and your daughter will write articles, and people all over the world will read them. It’s kind of complicated to explain. Just take my word for it.
There’s much more I could tell you, but you are still of the thinking that anyone over 30 is ancient. I will leave with this: You are in for an amazing ride. Enjoy every minute of it.
