If you have been reading this blog for a while now, you know that I travel to Ohio for work. I don’t mind because I get to spend time with my high school friend Amanda and her family who live in Dayton. Amanda and I loved doing projects even when we were in our teens. We bought old furniture and changed it with paint. I love painting things white, and now Amanda does as well. You saw her updated dining room (here) earlier in the year, and today we are excited to show you her kitchen upgrade.
(Before)
Everyone loves a good kitchen before and after, so come along as I show you Amanda’s. This is how it looked the day they viewed the house. Great size, lots of cabinets and perfect for her family which includes three pre-school boys. They changed the floor right away, but something still needed to be done.
(Before)
Along with the floor they also got rid of the florescent light above the island.
Many times when I visited, I talked about how much I love my painted white cabinets. Although painting them is a ton of work, they make a room look so fresh and open. Month after month I mentioned more and more about white cabinets. Amanda started to get on board. She always talked about how she LOVED my mom’s kitchen with the the white cabinets and gray peninsula.
Then one morning I got a call from Amanda asking, “Should I do it and paint the cabinets?” My response was “YES!” This little extra boost of encouragement was all it took. She was off prepping, sanding, priming, painting and glazing all during the boys’ nap time and when they were asleep at night. The end result….. Amazing.
Amanda painted the cabinets white and then added a glaze to the them. I had my first opportunity with a glaze on this project, and Amanda used the same type.
She also added a breadboard backsplash with wall paper. Isn’t it cute? It looks just like my mother’s wooden beadboard backsplash.
It took a total of three weeks of nap times and evenings for Amanda to transform her kitchen. I am so proud of her.
For the island Amanda matched the Annie Sloan color Paris Gray.
While I am always happy to hold a paint brush and help Amanda stencil her dining room or paint trim, my work schedule didn’t work out for me to be in Ohio and help for this process. I did enjoy spending time with Amanda and her family and admiring all the hard work she did. I learned when Mom and I painted my kitchen, it takes a lot of work. It looks wonderful.

Thanks, ladies, for including me on your blog and for your compliments. It was a lot of work, but we really love the end result. And, thanks Jordan for your encouragment and patience with all of my questions and phone calls. I have two questions: when are you visiting me next and what is our next project???

Amanda’s ‘before’ kitchen looks a lot like mine, so it was very, very interesting to me to see the ‘after’ as I’ve been trying to imagine what my kitchen would look like with a glazed finish. Thanks!

What an absolutely beautiful transformation!!! Love it. I definitely agree: white is the way to go. It totally transformed this kitchen, the surface of the cabinets, and the light and airy feeling! In our old house up north we also painted the wooden cabinets white….we did have a professional come in and spray paint. We had looked at replacing all the cabinets but everyone said NO, they are great quality…so we had all new doors put on and then did the painting.
But your glaze also adds so much to these: congratulations to all~

It really looks amazing! The white really opens up smaller more compact kitchens.
