Put A Shelf On It

As you probably already know, we live in a 1928 charmer.  Old houses have their quirks, but I like to think the charm and character outnumber the quirks.  For instance, we have a wasted space in our kitchen (here and here).

 

It is a quirky corner.  The previous owner painted this area with chalk board paint which we love.  He used it to help his daughter with her math, and we use it to help us with our memory.  You know how I love chalkboard paint.  It’s a great place for the always changing “to-do” list grocery list, camping list, etc.  You can see it is now reminding us that it is time to plant peas so they’ll be ready in the fall.

 

 

As you probably noticed above, there are also some ugly wires that I have been looking at since we moved in.  Our house is wired for speakers in the kitchen and dining room, but  at this point we have not set them up.  So, I needed to temporarily hide those wires till the day comes when we can put them to use.

 

There is also another quirk going on here.  There were some weird strips of wood that looked as if they had once supported a shelf.  We’re guessing a speaker sat on it.  This is the view from underneath.   To put those strips of wood to use, Mr. Spring measured and cut a triangular piece of  wood to fit in that area.  I painted it white.

 

 

After we placed the shelf on the brackets, I topped it off with a pop of color which serves double duty.  It hides the ugly wire, and it adds some interesting detail to the corner.  You can’t see it, but it also balances out some bright green Granny Smith apples that I have on the opposite end of the room.  I love it now. I have color and the wires have done their temporary disappearing act.   Great!   Now I’m off to plant those peas.
