The Dining Room Shelves

By Janette | Before and After, Decorating, Projects

I am so excited about today’s post.  We have been waiting since August for our dining room shelves to be built and installed, and I am happy to report that they are in.  We are so happy with the way they look.  It’s such an improvement.  We have some additional storage, which we really don’t need but it’s nice to have, and shelves to display some items that have been tucked away in our basement.  When we moved, I gave away a lot of our books from the shelves in our last house.  I didn’t realize we would be building shelves in this one but am so happy we did.  Are you ready to take a look at the dining room shelves?  Let’s go!

As I mentioned earlier, Debra Hupman, our designer, drew up two options for the design of our cabinets.  One went all the way to the ceiling and was a little more traditional, and this one which stopped below the crown molding, has thicker shelves, and a sleeker line.  (I always get asked about paint colors, and they are listed at the bottom in the sources.)

We opted for this one because I didn’t want to undo the crown molding that I love so much, and it gives us a shelf at the top for some baskets.

An Amish carpenter and his son built the shelves and installed them, and they did an exceptional job.  For the time being, I am not doing anything to the walls behind the shelves.  Perhaps I will add grass cloth wallpaper in the future, but that is not a priority at all right now. Oh, I should mention that we used the Shaker style that we have in the rest of our house along with the same polished nickel hardware.

I predict that things will get moved around frequently.

That old clock belonged to Mike’s aunt, and no one in the family wanted it.  We ended up with it for some reason after it had been repaired.  I think it is so ugly that it’s cute, and I actually like the touch of Victorian that it adds to the look.  It is made out of some kind of metal and is really, really, heavy.

I will change up some of the items seasonally, which will be fun.

You know my thoughts on silver.  It’s jewelry for the room, and I think every room needs a piece of silver.

Also, I am going to add lights that shine up rather than shine down.  I used what I had to accessorize, and it’s nice to see our things displayed once again.  They’re out of the basement storage closet and back to being enjoyed.

We also added gas logs to the fireplace.  If you would like to see the fireplace before we gave it a facelift, go to this post.

We had a small dinner party Saturday night, and it was so nice with the fireplace glowing, the Otis Redding station on Pandora playing in the background, good food, good wine, and good company. I gave a tour of the room on our Instastories showing it with the table set and the candles glowing.

Here’s a photo of the room before we added the shelves.  I love symmetry, and this room needed some.

Here’s the before that was shown in the real estate listing.  The previous owners used this room as their formal living room.

We’ve come a long way, baby!  We are loving our dining room shelves, and we both agree that it was worth the wait.

Thank you so much for spending time with us today.

The dining room shelves look great. The room looks so inviting now. I recently purchased the same host chairs and really like them. Good job.
