After walking past the dining room for over a year now, we have decided to replace our bench with new dining room chairs. First off, it didn’t look bad, but the lack of symmetry bothered me. Also, I was no longer comfortable asking guests to sit on a bench. If you linger after dinner or brunch over coffee, sitting on a bench without back support just isn’t that comfortable. I want to be comfortable, and I certainly want our guests to be comfy.
I removed the bench and then used the two chairs on the ends of the table in its place. Then I purchased a pair of matching chairs that complemented the other chairs. They are now at both ends of the table. You can buy them here.
I researched my purchase for several months before taking the plunge. I wanted to make sure the new chairs were sturdy, large enough for a husband who is seven feet tall, and looked nice with the other chairs. Also, I did not want them to fight with the navy and cream wing chair that sits in the corner of the dining room.
When our new fireplace shelves and cabinets are installed in October, the wing chair will probably go to another room. Although I like having a reading nook in the dining room, I don’t want to have too much furniture crammed into the space. That would just not work.
They work very well with the fabric on the existing four chairs. I might have to bring in some other color. I have been thinking about layering a rug on top of the seagrass rug.
I really like the details with the tufting and the nail heads. You might be wondering where the bench ended up. Well, right now it is under the mirror where it was last spring before I bought a serving cart. (You can see a glimpse of the bench in the photo.) The serving cart is floating in the corner. Once the shelves are in, I will take a serious look at the room and decide if the wing chair in the corner, the bench, and the serving cart are being used to their maximum potential. When the dark armoire is gone, and the shelves are in, the room should brighten up considerably. The room will tell me what looks best. To see the plans for the shelves, go here.
I wanted to buy the new dining room chairs while they were still in stock. I knew that with the holidays just a few months away, people would be looking to spiff up their dining experience. I was lucky to get the chairs while they were still in stock. They had excellent reviews and were VERY inexpensive. Also, I wanted to get them before my hiking trip in Spain. It would be one less thing to deal with when I get home.
Since these photos were taken, I added a runner that I made. If you follow us on Instagram, then you saw it already in our stories. I will do another post on the dining room after the shelves are installed and show you the runner then.
Are you planning any new purchases before the holiday entertaining season?
Take care.

Love, your new chairs.
I have had your new shelf and cabinet design in several different houses. Let me make a recommendation for the shelves in the cabinet use pullouts. The Older we get the more easier things need to be.
Janette says
Michelle, yes the shelves inside the lower cabinets will be pull-outs, but they’re only 15 inches deep. Thanks for your input.

Would you mind sharing your dining room paint color? It looks beautiful.
Jordan says
The color is Sherwin Williams Stucco, but she has the pigment reduced to 50%. She says it is the perfect neutral.
