One of the dishes that I have made since the early days of our marriage is cheeseburger pie. It is truly a comfort food for us, and it is a recipe that I always make for our children when they are home for a visit. I usually pair it with mashed potatoes, a veggie of some sort, and a comfort food dessert. Cheeseburger pie is best described as a meat loaf that is baked in a pie shell. The difference is that everything is thoroughly cooked before it goes into the crust to be baked, and then cheese is added to the top during the last minutes of baking. It’s an easy dish to prepare, and you can have dinner ready in about 40 minutes. Oh, and I use ground turkey, but ground beef was in the original recipe. Also, I double the meat and cheese ingredients to fill the crust more.
Ingredients
- 1 unbaked pie shell
- 1 pound ground turkey OR ground beef
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 cup panko
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 8 ounce can tomato sauce
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Bake pie shell 8 minutes and remove from oven.
- Brown ground meat and onion in a skillet till done. Drain fat.
- Stir in panko, oregano, tomato sauce, salt and pepper. Stir gently to combine.
- Put meat mixture in pie shell and bake for 30 minutes.
- Add cheddar cheese to top and bake 5 minutes more.
- Serve immediately.
When we were first married, I subscribed to a recipe program and received about 20 recipes each month to put into my file. It was sponsored by either Betty Crocker or Better Homes and Garden. This recipe came with the meat category. I loved those recipes and used them religiously. However, somewhere in a move or whatever, they disappeared, and I now make this recipe from memory. I think you will like this one.
Take care.

I had those recipe cards too. They were Better Homes. They’re available on ebay.

The one that you put the cards in a big plastic box? I did too! I wish I had kept it now.
Janette says
Jamie, yes those are the ones. I wish I had kept them, too.

Great recipe! Just made it with one small tweak – I added cauliflower to help me increase the veggie intake of my toddler and preschooler. They both loved it! Thanks so much for sharing it.
