Who doesn’t love a good bargain and especially at an auction? Last week I noticed a blue and white platter in an ad for an upcoming local auction. I immediately thought it would go for $300 and no less. Even though I assumed it was out of my range, I decided to drop by the auction to have a look.
I sat through an hour’s worth of war mementos, and then they started selling the dishes. Early on they sold a beautiful black and white French transferware platter for only $45.00. I was shocked and hopeful.
When the blue and white platter was on the auction block, only a few of us were bidding, and I won it for only $42.00!!
It is really large and luscious. It is American-made, rather than English and is in the Blue Willow pattern. I am sure that it would have brought more if the manufacturer had been a fine English company. However, it has been loveingly used and has a great patina. The back simply has the number 11 stamped into it. If anyone has knowledge of what the number is for, please let me know.
I bought a plate hanger large enough to hold it, and asked our handyman to hang it up here…
above the stove.
Doesn’t it look great?
It’s the perfect size for the stove hood. It’s not too big nor is it too small. I am really pleased with the way it looks.
So, that’s my latest auction bargain. How about you? Have you gotten a great deal at an auction lately?
Take care.
I went to the UK Art Museum Tag sale about two weeks ago. I bought a set of 12 white linen napkins from Gattle’s-never been used THE Gattle’s box. Can’t wait for you to see them they are lovely–oh yes, $10 for the set.
Hi Autumn! OH, your platter is just beautiful! I have a lot of Blue Willow and have two large platters. The blue and white looks so beautiful in your gorgeous kitchen!
Be a sweetie,
Shelia 😉
Wow I have the exact same Blue Willow platter. I bought it over 15 years ago, and I paid $65.00 for it. Good deal and looks great over your stove. Thanks for stopping by!
I love your stove backsplash! & nice deal on the plate.
No way! $42!?!? I’m completely stunned. And it looks perfect!
That looks great and I’m not sure I would have thought to put it there but it really is a nice place to showcase it. Good eye to spot that and take a chance at the auction.
I love your platter and it looks beautiful on your hood. My mother has one very similar that I hope to inherit one day!
Your platter looks fabulous over your stove! What a perfect perch for it. So pretty next to the white. I bought a similar platter a few years ago and have it stored away. You’ve inspired me to get it out again. I’m visiting from Coastal Charm’s Tuesday party.

It’s so pretty! It really is perfect for that space. Fills it out perfectly.
It looks great! That kitchen is beautiful!
Wish I had seen those on ebay first. Love them.
Fabulous as usual!
Did you roll the bike to block the kitchen door? 😉
No, the bike is against the wall near the entrance to the kitchen.
Oh, how beautiful!! I swoon for anything blue and white! Found you via Coastal Charm’s link party. Pop over for a visit when you have a moment. Tootles, Kathryn
