Thanksgiving and San Diego

By Janette | Entertaining, Travel

Hello, everyone.  You might think that the two of us have dropped off of a cliff, but we have just been super busy with entertaining out of town guests (Jordan), hosting Thanksgiving (Jordan), traveling to Charlotte, NC and then San Diego, CA (Janette), doing some Christmas prep (Jordan), getting my life back in order after a week away (Janette.)  Mr. Right and I drove to Charlotte to spend three nights there.  It was great hanging out with Jordan and family, our son Cory and his wife Josie, my brother-in-law, and some of Yankee’s family.

Jordan and Yankee were fantastic hosts.  We started Thanksgiving morning by going to the Charlotte Thanksgiving Day parade which is a pretty big deal down there.  It was the first parade for Little Miss.  The weather was balmy, and we were able to really enjoy the morning.

There was everything to see that you would expect in a parade including clowns, but their clowns looked friendly and nice.  They weren’t the frightening version that we have heard about in the news recently.

That afternoon we all sat down together for a delicious and traditional Thanksgiving meal with all of the trimmings.

That night while still comatose from all that we ate, we drove to the Charlotte Speedway to view the wonderful Christmas lights.  The men were so excited to be on the actual race track, but the girls were, “Meh”.  The lights were great, though, and went on forever.

Then bright and early the next morning, Mr. Right and I started our seven hour drive home to Lexington so we would arrive in time to shower and hop on a plane to San Diego for a long weekend.  We arrived very late on Friday night (actually it was early Saturday morning) and slept in the next morning.  We treated ourselves to room service and had breakfast in bed.  Mr. Right watched college football, which was on east coast time, and a little past noon we headed out.

We stayed downtown and did a lot of walking.  Our first stop was the Little Italy Farmers’ Market.  It was packed with people, and I so enjoyed seeing all of the flowers, cheese, meats, fresh fruits and vegetables, and more that they offered.

Then we headed to a wonderful restaurant called Ironside.  The food, service, and decor were outstanding.  The wall behind me was completely covered in fish heads, but not in a creepy way.  It was all very artsy.

The next day we rented a car and drove a lot.  We went to the Torrey Pines Country Club for a look around.  It was pouring the rain then, and I didn’t get photos.  Rain is rare in the San Diego area, according to the locals, but it rained hard Sunday morning and Monday afternoon. We followed that up with a visit to Coronado Island, which was across the bay from San Diego.  It was packed with charm, and I wanted to live in each little house that I saw.  The famous Coronado Hotel is there, and we strolled around for a while.  The hotel is over 100 years old and was decked out for Christmas.  An herb and vegetable garden was planted between the hotel and the ocean.  I was impressed that such a large hotel would have its own garden.

Then we headed to the USS Midway for a tour.  It’s the number one tourist attraction in San Diego.  It could carry 4,500 people at one time when it was in service.  It was a floating city that  was in combat in several wars starting with World War II and ending with Desert Storm.  Afterwards we ate fish tacos, which everyone told us we had to do.  They were delicious.

We spent our last day at the San Diego Zoo and walked until we couldn’t walk anymore.  Then we went back to Ironside for another delicious meal and followed it up by going to see “Allied”, starring Brad Pitt.  It was excellent, and I highly recommend it.  Mr. Right and I go to a lot of movies, and this one was really good.

Then we caught an Uber to the airport and took the red-eye home.  Jordan’s guests left today, and I will be caught up on cleaning and laundry, and we will both jump into our Christmas decorating.  I did something I thought I would NEVER do, and I can’t wait to tell you.  Meanwhile, come back tomorrow to see the cute advent calendar Jordan put together for Little Miss.

Take care.

Okay, so now I’M tired, just reading about your fantastic travels (J/K!) If you’ve seen the funny movie, Some Like It Hot (Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis), you’ll know that many scenes were filmed at the Hotel Coronado.

Diane, we saw that theater when we were on Coronado, but the one we went to was within walking distance of our hotel – The Renaissance. We loved San Diego and hope to come back some day.
