Janette here…..Jordan doesn’t know it, but I high-jacked her blog post to let you all know that today is her birthday. As we await the arrival of “Little Miss”, I wanted to share a picture of Jordan at about the same age. I would like to wish a Happy Birthday to my partner in crime and my little miss.
Hi everyone. I think it is about time that I do another new house post for you. We have been busy with the holidays and travel for work and pleasure. Since we moved in and I gave you a little pre-decorated tour of our house, I have spent most of my house energy on unpacking (finished), organizing (half-way finished) and painting (80 per cent finished). With the arrival of “Little Miss” getting closer and closer, we are trying to get as much done around here as possible.
I was so excited to have a dining room in our new house. It just seems so southern to me to have a separate dining room. I know it is a room that doesn’t get used in a lot of homes, but since our only eat in part of our kitchen is our breakfast bar, we actually eat our dinners in the dining room. (We ate all of our meals in the dining room of our last house, too.) My first reaction was to go very formal, but I’m not going over the top.
The first thing we did was paint all the trim and walls. I LOVE the wall color which is Cotton Grey by Behr. When my mom saw it in person, she liked it so much she painted some areas in her place the same color. You can see we are using pretty much the same furniture from our last dining room.
While I really loved the DINE sign in our last house, it is not working in our new place. My main art is going to be these silver platters. I used some on a small wall in Syracuse and liked the look so much that I’m going bigger with them here. I have been collecting them as I find them in antique and thrift stores. I want to eventually fill the wall. I was excited to see that the HGTV design house has silver trays above a bed.
I have been asked how I hang them, and it so easy when I use these. They work great, and if I ever need a platter for a dinner party, it is an easy task to take one down. Oh, and here you can see our new custom plantation shutters that were just installed. Since we plan to be here a long, long, long time, we felt the investment was worth it. I am drooling I love them so much. However, because we made that big purchase, we have to save up now for more/new furniture for other parts of the house.
This hutch, which was one of our first blog projects ever, will eventually be replaced with a buffet/dresser from my brother and sister-in-law. I just need to make the trip to DC to pick it up. This hutch has served me well, but it did get a little damaged in the move.

Once the buffet arrives, I plan to hang a big mirror over it and put two colorful lamps on both ends. These are the ones I am crushing over right now.
Another thing I plan to change sooner rather than later in the room is the light fixture. While I wish my chandelier that I won on the Price is Right would have worked, it just didn’t.
We have a Cost Plus World Market here, and I love that store. They carry this great light, and I am just waiting for it to get back in stock. They do have a medium one, but I need to hold out for the larger size.

Our dining room table has been with us through thick and thin, and I have restained and painted. Our chairs however are on their last leg. I love this style, but can’t make up my mind on which color I like best. Any thoughts?
Well, that is where I am for now. My parents have an oriental rug that they are trying to give to me. It was an investment piece for them, and they would like for it to be used rather than rolled up in their basement. I go back and forth on if I want to take on the commitment of an oriental rug, but at this point I am leaning towards yes. As soon as we have our buffet, mirror, lamps, and ceiling light, I will be sure to give you another update. I hope you enjoy this house journey I am on.
Cheers

Happy Birthday! I love the paint color you choose for your dining room . Also the light you are crushing on from world market , I agree it will look fabulous in your dining room . How exciting to soon have a little one !
Hi Kathy,
Thanks I am checking every day to see when it is back in stock. I think it will make a good statement.
Cheers!
LOVE your dining room — the light floors, the woodwork, those shutters, the silver trays! I do think some color would be a nice addition. If you’re considering putting the oriental in this room, perhaps you could choose a chair color to coordinate with that. Or coordinate with the pretty blue lamps. Good luck!
Kay,
Yes I agree 100% color is needed. I think this room will always be evolving!
Cheers
Happy Birthday, Jordan!! The house is looking great. My vote is for the scarlet colored chairs, but I know whatever you decide will look fantastic. xo
Josie,
I figured you would like the scarlet chair. That one is on sale if you are interested for yourself.
Cheers!
Happy Birthday to cute little Miss Parkersburg-love those chunky thighs;)
Go neutral on your dining room chairs because you love to refresh/change your decor often.
The room looks great!
Amanda,
I had no idea my thighs were so chunky as a child! I think so much comes down to the rug which does have a lot of color. I need to get it in the room first I think to make the final decision.
Cheers
Happy Birthday Jordan!! Best wishes for a year filled with joy!! You were a cute kid Jordan!
I love what you have started in the dining room. The paint color is beautiful. I have a room I want to paint grey and this just might be the color. The silver platters == love it!! Cant wait to see the progress.
Mary,
Highly recommend Cotton Grey by Behr it is a great grey. Hopefully I can scoop up more silver platters soon.
Cheers!
Jordan,
Happy Birthday! I hope it is a wonderful day! You are going to have an exciting year with the arrival of Little Miss!
Your riding room looks fabulous, I love the paint color. I have been looking for a grey paint and I think I will try this in my guest bath!
Happy day!
Elizabeth,
Yes it is going to be an exciting year! Good luck with the guest bath.
Cheers

HAPPY BIRTHDAY wishes to you Jordan !!! The house looks great !
Thank you, Charlotte!
Happy Birthday! I love your new dining room….so ripe with possibilities! An oriental rug sounds wonderful…you could pull colors for the chairs from the rug. I really like your idea of the silver trays…they go so well with the plantation shutters! 😉
Thank you, Donnamae. If I do the rug, I think we will use it upside down. It will tone down the colors.
OK…..the heading says “Speak Your Mind” so at the risk of upsetting your mom, here are my penny’s worth of thoughts….which is about all they’re worth! Love the new paint, shutters and trays. I think the sideboard, mirror and light fixture will take your room to a whole new level of sophistication from the hutch! However, it seems like the contemporary design look is for the sisal type rug like you have and with your clean, contemporary room, I think an oriental rug will drag it down and detract from the look you are going for, unless it’s more of a neutral color rug. I’m a lover of color so think the colored chairs or even the print would be a great addition. Especially if you don’t plan on window treatments, which are certainly not necessary now that you have those gorgeous shutters. Also, with a young child in the midst, the color and/or print chairs will be much more forgiving than the light colored neutral upholstery. Like some of the above comments, I’m sure whatever you decide will look good so ultimately, do what makes you happy!! And, have a very Happy Birthday!!
Carolyn,
This is the dilemma I am having. My mom has offered to bring the rug the next time she comes. I will live with it first, and go from there. A pattern and color with Little Miss is a good suggestion, I didn’t even think of that element. Ahh decisions, decisions!
Cheers
Happy Birthday! I love how your dining room is coming together.
I am busy this winter with organizing projects, reading books and preparing for a book discussion on Boys in a Boat. You and Charles would enjoy this. Biography of Washington State’s crew team who won the Berlin Olympics. Great story.
Thank you, Beth. My mom just read it and said Charles would like it.
Happy Birthday Jordan…your photo is adorable!…Glad your mom hijacked your post!….Love the dining room and love the vision that you have for it. The trays on the wall are perfect!
Thank you, Shirley!
I am immediately drawn to chair #2. Love that blue!
You’ve done a lovely job on this dining room. It really motivates me to want to get to work!
Tammigirl,
That blue is so pretty and even prettier in person.
Cheers!
I love the room! I do have a question, though. Do you happen to know the name of the fabric that is on the two end chairs or were they bought that way? Whatever it is, I love it!
I love the grey on the walls and the trays!
Debbie,
The two end chairs on the table are from Ikea. The fabric was one of their slip covers for the chairs. We bought them almost five years ago so not sure if they still have that pattern. I don’t recall seeing it last time I went to Ikea. I also have two end chairs on each side of the hutch. Those I purchase from Target a few years ago.
Cheers!
Jordan I hope that you had a very happy birthday!! Your dining room looks great and I love the colors that you have used.
Alicia,
Thank you! I had a nice birthday and thanks for the sweet words on our dining room, always a work in progress.
Cheers
