My grandmother owned a restaurant for a while before she retired. The food was all homemade and delicious. The little cottage restaurant had quite a good reputation in her town. One of my faves on her menu was a hot dog with homemade sauce. It’s not that I liked the hot dog so much, but the sauce took it to a whole other level. It was the best I have ever eaten and probably ever will eat. I am thrilled to share that hot dog sauce recipe with you today. With cookout season and a holiday week-end here, there just might be some grilled hot dogs on your menu. Be sure to make some of this sauce to go with them. It’s a little tart and a little sweet and a little spicy. We shared this recipe when we first started blogging and had about two readers, so, we thought it was time to bring it back for a second act.
GRANDMA’S HOT DOG SAUCE
1 pound ground beef or turkey
1 3/4 cups ketchup
1/4 cup mustard
3 onions, chopped
3 tablespoons chili powder
3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup sugar
Brown meat and drain. Put it along with the remaining ingredients in a sauce pan and cook covered for 45 minutes on medium low. Be sure to stir frequently because it will stick. Serve warm on top of cooked hot dogs. It is also great topped with chopped onions, relish, and/or slaw.
This recipe tastes even better the second day and freezes well.
Have a wonderful and safe holiday week-end. We will see you back here next week.
Cheers!
