Happy Monday. Probably a lot of you are on vacation this week since you can squeeze out an extra day next Monday after the holiday week-end. If you are, have a great time and stay safe. Remember your sunscreen!!! We can now do the wedding day countdown on one hand. Nebraska, here we come. If any of you are from the Cornhusker State, give us a shout-out. Since our son is marrying a native Cornhusker (she now calls DC home), does that make us honorary Nebraskans???
When I was doing some major cleaning in the kitchen last week, I decided to add a little interest to the kitchen table.
With July 4 happening this week, we didn’t want to be the only blog out there that isn’t observing the holiday in some sort of way.
I didn’t want the centerpiece to be “in our face” July 4th. I just wanted some hints of it. So, as you all should know by now, my style is to shop the house, and that’s just what I did.
For the foundation of the vignette, I used my new navy and white striped rug from Ikea. Since it hasn’t been on the floor yet, it was the perfect solution. And by the way, how can these tiny area rugs be so inexpensive?
I topped it with my passport tray, and then I added some red, white, and blue cookbooks. Both of them are about French cooking by the way. (I guess this vignette will work for Bastille Day, also).
Next came a Bybee pottery pitcher. Bybee is a pottery business located about 45 minutes from here. It is a small fifth generation family-run business, and in order to buy their wares from them directly, you have to be in line at their shop on certain days by 3:30 a.m. so that you’ll have a chance to buy something when the doors open. Once my mother-in-law and I arrived soon after the shop opened, and there wasn’t a thing left. We learned our lesson on that one.
I filled the pitcher with the wooden spoons I bought at my favorite Parisian street market. I visit it every year and buy the wooden spoons from the same gentleman every time. Along with the spoons, I tossed in just one red item – an old rolling pin.
The Yankee candle is a soft blue and smells wonderful. Jordan and I both took advantage of their recent sale – six of their big candles for just $60.00. The shipping was only $5.95. It was one of the deals of the year. (This is not an endorsement or ad, but Yankee is our favorite candle). I went to their factory once, and it was candle hell. It was like a football field sized building full of candles. Whoa – I’m way off topic here.
Some fresh flowers in a clear blue vase finished off the look. It is simple, crisp, and clean and my version of an Independence Day vignette.
