Happy Tuesday, everyone. Thank goodness summer is finally here so I can get back in the garage and paint some furniture that needs some TLC.
For instance, our Malm dresser from Ikea has been very patient. This dresser has given us plenty of use. It has been hidden away in my closet when we lived in Atlanta, and also here. However, we recently installed the Container Store’s Elfa system in our closet so I no longer had a need for the Malm. I thought I would play around with painting it using my homemade chalk like paint recipe I have used before. Click here to see the recipe.
This is not the most sturdy piece of furniture, but I still wanted to give it a new look. I lightly sanded the particle board and then went over it with a de-glossing agent.
Since I was using my own homemade paint, I probably didn’t have to sand the piece, but I did it anyway. I just wanted to make sure the paint was able to stick to the dresser.
I thought I took some action shots, but I guess I forgot. I had a coupon for a free sample of Valspar from Lowe’s, and I cashed it in for the color Liquid Jade. I love the color and will be using it again. I then thought it needed something else so I aligned some numbered stencils on the front of the drawers. ( I am keeping it real with the dog water bowl in the background).
I taped them down and did a little stencil work. It was my easiest stencil project to date.
I’m really happy with the results. I did lightly sand the paint after the last coat and added wax to protect it. I didn’t distress it but that can easily be done later. I was hoping this piece would work in our dining room, but it is just too small for the space. I will see if it works in another area of the house, or it might end up on Craigslist. Note to self: Check the furniture placement before painting.
Even if I do not keep this piece, it has served me well for four years, and it was a quick and easy paint project that didn’t cost me a dime.
Cheers!
