When I lived in Hawaii, I got my certification to scuba dive. Mr. Spring was a big diver, so it was something we enjoyed doing together. Nothing is more peaceful then being underwater away from everything and swimming with the fish. I did get spoiled because the diving in Hawaii was great and simple. We could leave work, rent some air tanks, and be underwater in no time at all.
This is one of the pictures we took while diving. Now that I live in the Northeast, I wanted to bring a little ocean to our house. I have been seeing coral everywhere in Blogland and on Pinterest, and I thought that it would be the perfect little thing to add for a summer touch. I decided instead of buying one that was painted and ready, I would save a little money by painting some coral.
I picked up this piece of coral at the pet store for under five dollars. Pet stores sell coral for aquariums, and their prices are lower than at craft stores.
It was sunny outside today, and since I had some white spray paint on hand, I went to town. I put the coral on a piece of cement block to help make it easier to paint.
Unfortunately, when I was finished with the spray painting, the coral was permanently attached to the block. I guess I went a little crazy with the white, and the two stuck together. I have tried multiple things to get it unstuck, but then I decided I actually like the block. I decided to spray it as well. So, now we have a little piece of the Hawaii vibe in our house. I need to rearrange a dresser top to make a home for the coral. Now it just sits on the sofa table in our living room.
Not bad for a quick makeover for under $5.
Wow it turned out great! It made me laugh thinking about how it stuck to the block like that! They really look cute together though.
Thanks for the terrific idea! I’ve wanted a piece of coral for my bathroom for ages and never thought to look at the pet store! I’m lovin’ that you admitted that the cement block was not part of your original plan but you went with it – it DOES make a great base!
