I love entertaining in the winter. There is such a comfy feeling when enjoying some nice wine and comfort foods with friends while the fire is blazing and the snow is falling outside.
I mentioned earlier this month that I love decorating with blues and white after the holidays. The cool colors and cold weather work for me, and they seem so fresh after living with Christmas greens and reds for a month.
I decided to pair our white Wedgewood Nantucket basket dinner plates with royal blue depression glass salad plates, clear wine glasses, and royal blue water goblets. The utensils were our everyday stainless.
At first, I planned to place everything right on the table without place mats, chargers, or a table cloth, but the look seemed too uninviting.
I wanted to use white place mats, but I don’t own any. So, I went to Plan B and pulled out some nice and crisp dinner napkins placed on the diagonal to use as place mats. They worked perfectly.
The centerpiece was very simple – three lime green mums in a tiny silver holder and white candles in clear Alvaar Aalto candle holders.
We kept it casual and ate in the kitchen. With such a simple table setting, the food was the star.
The menu was really good and perfect for a winter evening. While I finished up the cooking, we girls sipped skinny cosmopolitans, and the men sipped their bourbon. The meal started off with a roasted squash salad (I’ll share photos and the recipe tomorrow), coq au vin, and a simple dessert of fresh fruit. We finished the meal with a nice port and chocolates. By the end, we were all feeling warm on the inside and outside.

I have a blue kitchen so I love finding dishes with a touch of blue. Today I found a big white bowl with just a little blue around the edge. It really is cheery in the winter months.
Love the blue and the white. They were my wedding colors 30 years ago and I still find myself gravitating to that pairing.
