Light Switch

By Janette | Before and After, Decorating

Author:  Autumn

If you have been reading our blog for a while, you know that Mr. Autumn and I sold our family home in December and are down-sizing to a 2700 square feet townhouse near downtown.   We hired an architect who designed changes we wanted, and we have been in deep drywall dust since then.  The crew has been working right along, and we are projecting that move-in day will be mid-May.

Meanwhile, we have made some baby steps, and I will share one with you today.  Our townhouse is located in an historic part of town that is overseen by an historic commission.  Many outdoor improvements/changes must be approved by them.  Keeping the location of our place in mind,  we recently purchased our outdoor lighting.

We selected something that is a traditional style with an interesting finish.  It is sort of a mixture of bronze, pewter, and brass.  That way when one of those metals goes out of style, certainly one of the other ones will come into style.

I don’t know what the previous owner was thinking when he chose the light we replaced.  It certainly does not go with the colonial facade of the row of six townhouses.  I don’t know how he got away with this choice because I see it as arts and craft or mission style.  Don’t you?

The old light

We are really pleased with the way our new light looks, and we hope to get the seal of approval from the commission.  I love the way it compliments the brick color and  vice versa.  It is also so nice and clean since pesky spiders and mosquitos haven’t discovered it yet.

The new light

This close-up shows how the paints are mottled.  I bought three waterproof outdoor acrylics in the black, copper, and pewter colors to update the old brass house numbers making their finish as close to the light’s finish as possible.  I might also add a touch more pewter to the light so it will blend better with our new door hardware.

A close-up view of the finish.

Take care.

Love the new light, you did an awesome job with blending all of the colors together. We replaced our about two years ago, but they have faded so much I am going to have to paint them this summer.
    Thanks for sharing!!

Great choice! Of course, I have to say that since I have 4 of those lights in our basement, waiting to be installed. Good luck with yours.

I love the new light fixture as well and I cannot believe that they would not approve that for if it is a colonial historic district the old light fixture certainly did not fit in! I’d love to see it when it’s up further back for a picture!

I’ll take another picture once we get our windows replaced, which will happen in a few weeks. They’re ordered.

I love that new fixture, it is really gorgeous. We are headed to the Lexington area next week…anything we shouldn’t miss? We decided to stay in Berea because of the craft things, but will certainly be in the city as well. Warm it up down there for us, okay?
