When my husband and I got engaged, my parents gave us a wonderful engagement gift. It was our very own original monogram, created just for us. We worked closely with artist Claudia Engle who developed a monogram that fit both of our personalities and that would be timeless. Claudia does amazing work. You can check out her website here.
We had the intials of our first names, J and C, and wrapped them around the first letter of our last name, H. We used the monogram at our wedding and will continue to use it on stationery products, glassware, linens, and even baby things in the future.
Since we have had the monogram, I have been trying to think of ways to incorporate it into our new home. Just the other day I realized we do not have coasters in our living room, and then I got a great idea. I thought our monogram would be great on coasters. I just had to play around to figure out how to do it. I thought decoupage would be the way to go. I did some research online and came up with a plan.
First, I had to purchase some materials. This is what I needed: plain tiles, Mod Podge, tissue paper, card stock, felt, spray adhesive and varnish.
I assembled everything before I began my project.
The first thing I had to do was print our monogram onto the tissue paper which I would then decoupage to the tile. I knew the tissue paper was too thin to go through my printer. Gluing it to the card stock with spray adhesive would make it stronger. I sprayed the card stock with spray adhesive and then gently placed and smoothed out the tissue paper on top.
Once the tissue paper was on the card stock, I cut around the edge to make sure the tissue paper wouldn’t get stuck in the printer. Then it was ready for printing.
My plan worked. Here you can see that the monogram printing on the tissue paper was a success. I waited for the ink to dry before I proceeded to the next step.
Once the ink was dry, I gently peeled off the tissue paper. Now that I know how easy this is, I can print almost anything onto tissue paper. The tissue paper will look opaque but if you want color or design, you could pick a different tissue paper.
The next step was to cut out the monogram and tissue paper to the size of the tile and then place it on the tile.
I put some Mod Podge on the tile right before I applied the monogrammed tissue paper.
Here it is after my first coat Mod Podge. I applied four coats just to be on the safe side. I waited for the tiles to dry between each coat. After the final coat had dried, I brushed on a couple of coats of varnish to protect the tiles from the hot, cold, and wet beverages they will encounter.
When all of the applications were completely dry, I cut felt the size of each tile and glued it onto the backs.
I was thrilled to see how it all worked out and how easy the whole process was. And now, it’s time for a drink.
Cheers!
I was not paid by any of the products mentioned in this post.

We are in need of new coasters and I just happen to have some tiles up in the barn! I know what I will be doing with them now. Thanks for posting this great idea. Your monogram is so classy and beautiful!

Very cute! I’ve also used stamps on tiles for coasters, which also works well. Do you have a custom stamp or embosser? That would be SO handy for stationary/books/etc. I received a gift certificate to get a custom stamp and I’m hoarding it to decide what to make.
