Plans for the Porch

By Janette | Before and After, Decorating, Projects

You might recall that I have been thinking about what to do with the brick on our screened in breezeway that we call the porch. (It constantly has a white powdery substance on it from moisture in the brick.)  Some of you told me what it is called, but at this moment, I don’t remember.  I suggested to you that we might paint it, and I asked for your input.  Thanks to all of you who had opinions and shared them.  They really, really helped!  And by the way, our unscientific poll showed that the majority of you did not want me/us to have our porch painted.  You chimed in with great suggestions, and we are going to do some of them first.  If these changes don’t give us the results we are hoping for, then we can always paint.  So, here are our plans for the porch as of this spring.

New Rug

Several of you felt the current rug (seen in photo above) is too dark.  That is true, but the reason for selecting that particular indoor/outdoor rug was that the porch is the main thoroughfare between the house and the garage.  I knew the rug would receive a lot of action, and I felt dark was the way to go.  I have purchased a new indoor/outdoor rug for that area.  It has a navy blue background (yes, I know that’s dark), but bright big flowers in flashy colors are all over it.  I am going to try layering the rug first, and if that looks too wonky, then we will remove the current rug and just use the new one.  The new rug is 5 x 8, and so it can either layer or stand alone.  It has the same colors as the rug that is there now, but in a bright way.  I will, however, bring back the current rug for next winter.

Paint the Mirror’s Frame

Some of you suggested that we replace the mirror with one that is not as dark.  Instead of replacing it, I am going to spray paint the frame, which is wrought iron, a cream color that will stand out more against the brick.

Add Plates

I have some really pretty Wedgewood plates that hung in the foyer of our last house.  They have been in our basement since we moved here, and I have been itching to use them.  So, with Mike’s help, I am going to hang them on both sides of the mirror.

New Art

I will switch out the apple painting for something whimsical and colorful.  I love the butterfly that was in a show home here in Lexington a while back.

Of course, Pillows

Of course, the love seat will get pillows in summer colors.  I think I can use some that are already in my stash.  If not, I will probably make some new covers.

Plants

As soon as it warms up, I will fill the space with plants that have been spending the winter inside the house.  This little girl has been in our dining room all winter, and she is just itching to get outside.

So, those are the plans for our porch.  If you have any other suggestions, I am all ears.

Take care.

One suggestion . . . if you decide to paint, look at the paint that Young House Love used on their house that is a brick colonial. I think it was a mineral type paint, but an unsure. They had a lot of information on that paint and why it was best for brick. Just a humble suggestion.

That paint company is located in Louisville, KY which is just an hour away.
