Ever since we bought our new place, I have been having a debate with myself on the color of the front door. Since navy blue is my favorite color, and it will be sprinkled throughout the house, it is a contender. However, dark gray is also in the running, and I don’t know why other than I think it would like nice with the color of the brick. Surprisingly, the historic commission doesn’t care what color I paint the front door. It could be pink with purple polka dots, or black and white zebra stripes, and they don’t care. The neighbors might care, but the historic commission doesn’t. Go figure.
(This is how it looks right now mid-remodeling.)
So, anyway, I did some looking on the world wide web and found a few examples of each color to show you. I should add that we are keeping the original front door and original front door hardware which is a tarnished brass. It is the only thing original item we are using other than the brick. Everything else is new, but we felt this is a good way to give a nod to the past. The hardware was originally polished brass by Baldwin, and the lock man said it is a very good and expensive set. We are having it cleaned but not polished. I would love for y’all to chime in with your opinion on the door color. And while you are at it, should I paint the inside of the front door the same color as the front? And will both colors look okay with a black banister on the stairs? And as an aside, I don’t know how everyone finds such could example photos. Finding the right ones is always a challenge for me.
The blue doors are first.

Now let’s look at the gray doors.

It would be so much easier for you to see the overall effect if the camera angles were wider, but this is what I found. Now, just leave a comment telling me what you think. We love getting your opinions, and we read every comment and email. Thank you in advance.
Take care.

I love the Navy! We are limewashing our house and painting the shutters Navy and the door a peacock blue. I think if you love Navy and it will be present throughout the home it’s a nice way to start out the visual journey 🙂

Navy for sure!

A navy door would be stunning on your newly remodeled home. It would be a lovely poo against the brick.
Melissa says
Pop…..

I vote gray. I think navy is ‘expected’ with the red brick, but the gray would be unexpected. I think the brass would pop with either color.
Carol says
Absolutely Navy! You will be tired of gray over night.
Kelly says
I would absolutely paint the front door Navy. It’s an historical color and gives a rich and inviting feel to the entry.
Sandy says
The navy would look great, and it hints at a prominent color inside……besides, it’s you!sa
Cindy says
I think either color works, but I would give the edge to gray…it looks more elegant. But if you want a fun pop…then the blue works. For the inside, I guess it depends how soon the navy is introduced, but they should still both work. The gray with the black banister would work well. You could have some navy with gray in the entry to tie it all together.

Loving our dark gray on our front door even though it needs its second coat. I used “weathervane” by Finish All (heirloom traditions paint). This paint has a bonding agent and does not require a top coat. It was made to cover outdoor cushions and even leather and wood. The inside door is still stained to match the beams in the living room.

Navy is your favorite color so that’s what it should be—not sure about the inside
Patty says
Navy on the outside and gray on the inside! Really!

Navy! Blue doors on colonial homes look great. I have a blue door with white on my gray colonial Dutch cape. It’s a classic color.

I think navy on red brick homes is stunning….and classic. . I do like Ann’s of Sutton Place the best out of those doors. Don’t know if that has to do with shade of blue, or lighting? As far as the inside…navy, too. If you change your mind…it’s just paint! 😉

Even before remembering navy blue is your favourite color it was the color that just seemed perfect with the brick exterior. Definitely casting my vote for navy blue!
Kathy says
My vote for navy but what I did was take pic of our house & photoshop different colors of doors on it. Made it much easier because we usually repaint something several times until we’re happy.
Karmann says
I vote for navy!
Deb says
Gray is elegant and traditional, but the navy is you! Go navy!!!
Cindy Brown says
I pick navy! I think it will “pop” much more than gray.

Lovely home! I’d go with a Cobalt Blue!

Thanks all of you for the comments and suggestions. I’m in Europe and can’t reply to you all, but I appreciate your input. After seeing the doors here, I sir sure am going with a high gloss.
PAT WHITE says
I like the blue best…but, perhaps, just a shade or two lighter than the ones shown. Then whatever wreath or decoration you chose, for the door would stand out and be seen better.
