Silk Tie Easter Eggs

By Janette | Projects

Silk tie Easter eggs were first introduced to me years ago when I saw them on an old (before prison) episode of Martha Stewart.  It was such a cute idea that I actually made them.  The basic concept is that you buy old ties from a thrift store, or steal borrow some from your husband’s closet.  You cut them up and separate the layers.  Then wrap an uncooked egg with a piece of the silk, and tie it on both ends.  Boil them till the eggs are done.  Let them cool, remove the silk fabric, and voila!  You have silk dyed eggs.  That was the process in a nutshell.  Now you can follow along as I show you how to make them. And by the way, if you need to spruce up your front porch, this post shows you how to make an inexpensive Easter door mat.

Use Old Ties

Once you have selected some colorful neckties, separate the layers so that there is just one layer of silk.

Then wrap the silk around a raw egg.  Place the right side of the fabric against the egg, and tie both ends.

You can use dental floss or string to tie them up.

Boil 12 Minutes

Put the eggs in cool water and bring them to a boil.  Boil the eggs till they are done, which is about 12 minutes.  If I had it to do again, I would have boiled the eggs wrapped in yellow silk separately from the eggs wrapped in the dark colors.  Remove the eggs from the water, and let them cool.

When the silk tie Easter eggs have cooled, gently remove the silk fabric.  It’s kind of like a box of chocolates.  You never know what you’ll get. The brightly colored ties produce more vivid colors than the pastel ties.

These Silk Tie Easter Eggs Are Kid Friendly

And there you have the silk tie Easter eggs.  This is a fun and easy egg dying method that the kids can help you with.  Just be sure to supervise them around the boiling water.  They can cut up the ties and separate the silk from the bonding.  They can wrap and tie the fabric around the eggs.  When the eggs have cooled, they can remove the fabric and have a big surprise.  This is a great way to use those ugly ties that are in your husband’s closet if you don’t want to buy used ones at the thrift store.  Have fun with this one, friends.

Take care.
