Homemade caramel sauce is another reason to love fall. Especially if you are dipping a juicy apple into it. There are tons of recipes already online for caramel dipping sauce, and I chose this one from An Oregon Cottage. It is easy, takes just a few minutes of your undivided attention and is so delicious that you will want to lick the pan. This will not work as a coating for a whole caramel apple because it isn’t thick enough. It is definitely made just for dipping things like apples, pretzels, marshmallows, graham crackers, etc. Get creative with what you dip!
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup honey (I used corn syrup)
- 1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
- Finishing salt (optional)
Instructions
- Melt the butter in a heavy saucepan over medium-low heat.
- Add the remaining ingredients, raise heat to medium-high and bring to a boil, stirring constantly (will take 5 to 10 minutes.)
- Lower heat to medium or medium-low (you want to keep a very low boil) and cook for 3 minutes, stirring constantly. It will burn easily so do not stop stirring.
- Remove from heat, let cool a bit and then pour into a serving bowl and serve warm.
- Sprinkle finishing salt on top before dipping.
- Refrigerate any leftovers. Microwave a few seconds to soften before using again.
- Note - If it does burn, just pour it through a fine-mesh strainer over a bowl, but do not scrape the bottom of the pan. Push dip through strainer, leaving any browned bits in strainer.
This dip will be a huge hit for you. It could easily be served as a dessert. You and your family can sit around the table after the main course and enjoy some nice family time while dipping fresh apples or other goodies into this luscious caramel sauce.
Take care.
