“Fish on the floor” might sound like a weird name for a recipe, but it is a really delicious fish dish. My mother-in-law used to make it for us. A family friend, who lived in Alaska, created it, and his widow Mary gave it to me. It has a few steps, but it is so good that the extra work is worth it. It involves halibut, shrimp, and cheese along with some other goodies. A food styler I am not, and I feel the photos just don’t do this dish justice. Please ignore the photo quality and take my word for it. This recipe will be a hit. I hope you all make this one .
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 to 2 pounds halibut
- 1 pound shrimp, shelled, cooked, and chopped
- 1/4 cup crushed saltine crackers
- 1/2 cup green onions, chopped and divided
- 7 tablespoons butter
- 1 16-ounce can mushrooms, drained
- Pepper to taste
- 3 tablespoons flour
- 1 3/4 cup milk
- 1/3 cup chicken broth
- 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
- Cut halibut into serving size pieces.
- Saute mushrooms and onions in 4 tablespoons butter.
- Remove from heat, and stir in crackers, pepper, and shrimp.
- Place a layer of halibut in a buttered 9 x 12 inch baking pan.
- Top with shrimp filling.
- Add another layer of halibut.
- Melt 3 tablespoons butter and add flour, milk, and broth to make a sauce. Cook, stirring frequently, till this mixture has thickened. Pour over fish.
- Cover and bake 25 minutes.
- Remove from oven and add Swiss cheese and 1/4 cup chopped green onions (optional) to top. Cover and return to oven for 15 to 20 minutes more.
- Serve hot.

This is a great recipe to serve either your family or guests. It goes well with a veggie and salad. I am pretty sure you will love this one.
Take care.
Did I miss something? I don’t see crackers listed in the ingredients.
This sound delicious and perfect for Lent. I can’t wait to make it! Step no. 4 calls for adding crackers but I don’t see them in the ingredient list. Do you know what type of cracker and how many to add? Thanks! I always look forward to reading your posts!
What crackers?
Stir in crackers? What did I miss? This sounds GOOD!
Ladies, I have corrected the recipe. I reread it four times before I hit publish and missed that I had omitted the 1/4 cup crushed saltine crackers. Sorry for the mistake.
This sounds so good!
I think this will be perfect for my contribution to our Freezer Fund Raiser. We all bring a dish you can freeze and have an easy dinner with different prices for soups, entrees and desserts. Thanks
Thanks for the cracker update and thanks for sharing the recipe. Can’t wait to make it!
