Update in the Laundry Room

By Janette | Before and After, Decorating, Projects

I decided that after living with the wonderful Palladium Blue by Benjamin Moore in our laundry room for almost six years, that it is time for an update.  The laundry room sits at the end of our upstairs hallway and was actually the closet area of a large guest bedroom when we purchased our townhouse.  It seemed like a whole lot of wasted space to me, and I asked our architect if we could put a laundry room there.  Then I wouldn’t have to go all the way down to the basement every time I needed to wash a load of laundry or iron a shirt.  We were able to add the room just by moving a door and adding a wall.  Of course, all of that other stuff – plumbing, electrical, new cabinets, new floor, etc. –  had to be done, too, but it was all so worth it since we were already remodeling the entire house anyway.  Well, a few weeks ago, I spent a few hours changing the color.  The hallway is Behr’s Cotton Grey, and I wanted the room to blend in more with it.  I should add here that we buy all of our paint at Sherwin Williams, and if the paint color is by another company, they can still create it.  All paint companies can do that.

Since this was a spur of the moment paint project, I just went to the basement to see which paints were on hand.  I had a partial gallon of Cotton Grey and a partial gallon of Stucco with 50 per cent pigment. The Cotton Grey is in our foyer and upstairs hall, and the stucco is in our great room and kitchen.   I mixed the two together and came up with a lovely neutral greige that works just fine.

The laundry room is small, and I was able to paint the first coat one afternoon and follow up with the second coat the next morning.  It looks so much brighter and blends in much better with our other rooms.

This is what the room looked like before.  There wasn’t a thing wrong with it other than I was ready for a change.  I kept the accessories because I like them, and they have special meaning to me.

So, that’s it.  Less than a gallon of paint and a few hours, and our laundry room has a fresh, updated look.  In a few days we are going to do a laundry tips post.  Stay tuned for that.

Take care.

How lovely! My laundry room never looks so uncluttered.

Please tell me about the long pole across the room. Is it PVC and how is it mounted?

      Elizabeth,

I am here responding for my mom. It is a metal rod, more of a shower rod type. That way it can be mounted by tension.

Elizabeth, the pole is metal and is attached to two brackets – one on echo wall.

    Hi,
Love your laundry room and the new color.
I was wondering what type of floor do you have in there?? Is it tile???
I am remodeling a small guest room bathroom and your laundry room floor is the look I am going for.
    Thanks so much,
    Esther
