I never had the opportunity to know my paternal grandmother. She died a few years before I was born, but I was named after her.
I was lucky enough to receive a special item that belonged to her – her school slate. For those of you too young to know this, children used to have their very own slates to use instead of paper and pencil.
When we moved, I wanted to hang Grandmother’s slate in a special place.
We had a blank wall over our peninsula. We decided to hang our antique telephone and the slate there.
I thought it would be fun to put my grocery list – in French – on the slate. It is a great conversation starter. If you notice, even the piece of jute string is old.
The nice thing about this twosome is that the old telephone was from my maternal grandfather. He was an antique dealer. I purchased the phone from him because he had eight grandchildren and didn’t want to give something to one if he couldn’t do the same thing for all. That was fine with me.
Looking at this cumbersome anachronism sure does let us know how far we have come.
So, all I have to say is, “Call me.”
Take care.

What treasures! Having something from an ancestor is a real treat and having both is rare. Being able to display and enjoy them must give you a sense of family… of a heritage.
Wonderful!

I LOVE your phone. I would love to own one! I know you cherish it!
How wonderful to have family treasures in your home. I just passed on several things to my son that belonged to my grandfather including a phone similar to yours. Thanks for joining the Open House party!

Love the slate. I’ll bet there was one of those in my family, too. My grandmother was a teacher. Love the phone. I have one from my family’s farmhouse with the installation date of 1904 in it. It is huge….and very heavy with all the “insides” still intact.
What a perfect pairing…and all the better that they are family heirlooms.

Those are some awesome “memories” pieces. Eons ago when I was just a little girl, one of my Great Aunts had a phone like this. She always kept a little step stool close by, because I would talk forever to my “pretend family” on that phone. Thanks for bringing back some fond memories for me.
We did not have that phone, however an old fashioned black dial phone, and a small telephone table! I cannot wait to try the fudge sauce!
xoxo
