Hello, everyone. We mentioned in this post a few weeks ago that we spent some time in DC with our son and daughter-in-law, Josie. She has great taste and is making their home a cozy and inviting spot. She loves a good estate sale, and we happened to find one on the Saturday afternoon when I was there. I found a set of great water colors for next to nothing. It was just a few hours until the sale ended, and they were at the “make an offer” point. I made a ridiculously low offer, and it was accepted. Don’t you just love when that happens? I sure do!
The actual art was in great condition, but the mats and frames needed some TLC.
I started by going to Hobby Lobby and having them cut two new mats for me, this time in a flat black. Then I mixed up some green using paints I had on hand and painted one side green. That little step gave me the option of having two mat colors to use. I used the green first, but I will have the option of using the black if I ever want to move them to another room or if I get tired of the green.
I freshened up the frames with some black spray paint.
Then it was just a matter of putting them together and hanging them. I am really pleased with the way they look in our guest room. The wall is a very, very soft yellow and the green goes nicely with it.
Have you had any great scores at yard sales, garage sales, auctions, estate sales, etc. this summer? We would love to hear about them.

Hi Janette,
I’m going off subject here but I’ve communicated with you in the past about your Bike and Barge trips and I wanted to let you know that we did a northern Holland trip the 2nd of July. We had more fun and thank you so much for your blog posts about the trips you’ve been on. We would’ve never considered it if I hadn’t happened on your blog and read about your experiences. We hope to go on another one day! Had the best crew, guide and chef…northern Holland is so beautiful. My husband, sister and brother-in-law all went, as well as another couple from our church. We all loved it.
Thank you, thank you! Always enjoy your posts.

Sherry, I’m so glad it worked out and that you had a great time. We’re planning our a bike and barge in Germany next year.

Janette,
The best score I had at an estate sale was years ago. I bought a footed glass dish. I could feel the indented ground pontil on the bottom through the $1.00 price tag. It was a beautiful morning glory blue color and was in perfect condition. It was in a bedroom with the stacks of sheets, rugs, and board games.
When I got it home I removed the price tag and washed it. On the bottom of the dish it says L C Tiffany Favrile and an item
I collect glassware and never expected to have a piece of Tiffany. I don’t think I will ever top that find, but I can hope.

Rick, that sounds wonderful. I read a book about Tiffany called Clara and Mr. Tiffany. It was a real eye opener. Here’s the link if your’re interested:
